Sorry to tick off other die hard Marlins fans here, but...

If this team doesn't rebuild in a spectacular fashion in 2011, the new stadium won't make much of a difference after the first year or two. Yes, we have had some unfortunate injuries and bullpen troubles, but I don't think Loria has any serious interest in building up anything relevant.

I think the man will sell the team after the 2012 or 2013 season, having left taxpayers 2.1 billion dollars porer. He lied about the team being barely profitable so he could get the stadium at little cost to him, double the team's price, and sell high. I still have yet to see anything that makes me think Loria has any interest in fielding a team that will make season ticket holders proud, and attract new fans to come watch the games. Just ask former Expos fans/Nats fans exactly what they think about him.

As painful as it is, I'm here for the long run....like all of you. This is what it means to be a real fan, we love our Florida Marlins through good times and hard times. Soon enough we will have an owner who has a real passion for baseball, and a team that will make Miami the talk of the nation.

I don't know about that.

I haven’t lived in Florida for a decade, but the roof alone should make a huge difference.

(Of course, if they insist on keeping it open in 90-degree heat, it won’t make as much of a difference.)

And live games aside, the Marlins are a tougher sell these days. The way to grow the fan base used to be to get people who were nominally Yankees/Mets/Braves/whatever fans who moved to Florida into the games, because that was what was on TV.

Well, they blew that for the first decade or so with inconsistent television coverage.

And now, League Pass cuts into that strategy.

The fact that the Marlins aren’t contending is probably a factor. (Especially coupled with the fact that the Devil Rays ARE contending. I still don’t get baseball’s decision to build an expansion team right next to an expansion team that was still establishing itself.)

But the success or failure of the team is far from the main factor.

Unless, of course, it takes playing time away from Ryan Anderson.

A lot of it depends on how well Loria and the management promote the brand of the Marlins

Increasing visibility around not only South Florida, but up the east coast would go a long way to creating a larger fanbase. The new stadium will definitely help a lot (see: no more rainouts, no more blistering summer bake sessions), but a good team is a pretty important factor to succeeding as a franchise.

However, I think the Marlins have been a fairly consistent franchise this decade. More seasons than not have had the team over .500, and the team has had marquee players at every point in the decade. Also, the team that will likely open up the new stadium in 2012 will be comprised on blossoming stars, anchored by some of the best veterans in the league. Logan Morrison, Mike Stanton, Chris Coghlan, Dan Uggla, Hanley Ramirez, Gaby Sanchez, Matt Dominguez, Emilio Bonifacio, Scott Cousins, Cameron Maybin, Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, and Anibal Sanchez make up a very promising group that could replicate the success of 2003, or maybe even reach greater heights.

Chris Coghlan is the 2009 NLRoY (that's a +1 for me!)
Josh Johnson for the 2010 NL Cy Young!

I wouldn't blame the Rays

They’re having as much of an issue with attendance/fan base as we are, which is worse given the fact that they’ve been in contention for three straight seasons.

Stadium won't help much

It’s in a craphole neighborhood. I went down there a few months ago. It’s a bitch coming from Broward County at the 5pm/6pm hour for a 7:05/10 weekday game. I’ve been working Marlins games for nearly 15 years. I may do a few weekend games at the new stadium the first year. After that I’m quitting. It’s a 2nd job and just do it to keep busy but I don’t need it that badly. Won’t pay me to drive 40 miles each way. I will NOT even use my credential to take in a game down there.

Come off the 836, 12th Ave exit, sit at the traffic light and just try to count all the people living under that bridge before the light turns green. You can’t finish counting.

Not to mention, “IF” you get a lot of people (Mets/Yankees in town) traffic will much, much more horrible for people who live further away from downtown.

Sell! Sell! Sell!

Loria selling the team would be a good thing assuming, of course, that the new owner is committed. Same deal as with the Texas Rangers…had a horrible owner (Hicks) that leveraged the financial strength of the team to do other stupid business deals. But, now he finally sold the team and the new owner (Greenburg) will be much better for the franchise.
