It’s the second-to-last Earning Their Stripes episode of the 2019 Minor League Baseball regular season! Danny, Ethan and Ian gush over the Double-A production from Marlins No. 1 prospect Sixto Sánchez (2:36) and pick which outfielders they expect to emerge from the farm system’s surplus and stick in the big leagues (14:30). Monte Harrison, Jesús Sánchez and Víctor Mesa Jr. are among the personal favorites of the pod.
Top infield prospect Isan Díaz has struggled since being called up by the Fish, so the guys explain why he’s too soon to panic (28:30). As if it’s even possible to be “under the radar” with an 100+ mile-per-hour fastball, Jorge Guzman gets a few minutes in the spotlight (55:45). The conversation wraps up with some good-natured UM-UF trash talk heading into Saturday’s massive college football season kickoff (1:02:00).
Enjoy Episode 18 of ETS!
While the popular belief is that Guzman will work in relief as a major leaguer, he currently ranks second in the Marlins farm system with 133 2⁄3 innings pitched this season and fourth with 118 strikeouts. His control remains below average yet we have seen dramatic improvement from a year ago. Oh, and he’s been virtually unhittable this month.

Wrapping up his age-17 season in the Gulf Coast League, Mesa is playing center field regularly and slashing .295/.372/.416 (well above average by GCL standards). His first professional home run last weekend was a no-doubter to right.

New on Swings and Mishes, Ian’s latest piece covers the progress that outfielder Connor Scott has made in 2019. The former first-rounder moved up to High-A Jupiter in late July and figures to open there next season.
