This Friday, the Marlins will become the second MLB team to take the field in new locally inspired uniforms as part of the league’s City Connect collaboration with Nike.

Here’s the backstory behind these beauties:

Our city, renowned for its unique lifestyle, was cultivated many years ago, built upon a foundation of passion and pride. A destination for cultures from around the world, vibrant colors run through the 305—the melting pot of America and the gateway to Latin America. It’s the legacy of the generations past, present and future that fuel our cultura, with the determination of those that came before us and the drive of those that push us to take our next step forward.

More than a half century ago, a collection of talent from far and wide took the field in Cuba to prove they belong among giants. Now, amid Little Havana, the radiant red bleeds the storied past of the Cuban Sugar Kings in this new breed of baseball, blending old school character with the bold swagger of the hometown Miami Marlins, combining both substance and style.

The Marlins City Connect uniforms is designed with the personality and confidence of our city in mind. The storied past of the upstart Cuban baseball team and the synergy around the bold colors in their uniforms are brought to life once again to celebrate the bond with our community and the roots of the passion for the game of béisbol.

Our legacy continues to build our community and our cultura. Together, we move forward: Un Paso mas y llegamos!—One more step and we arrive!

Jazz Chisholm Jr., Sandy Alcantara, Miguel Rojas and Trevor Rogers were selected to model the special unis.

Last month, the Red Sox became the guinea pigs for this uniform series, paying homage to the Boston Marathon.

This reveal comes two-and-a-half years after the Marlins did a full franchise rebrand. Caliente Red was included in the new color scheme, but has not been utilized as the main color of a uniform like we’re seeing here with Legacy Red. It’s unlike any other look that the Marlins have previously had, even going back to the “Florida” era—see for yourself in this gallery of all-time alternate uniforms from Chris Creamer’s Sports Logos. But is it a better look? Vote in the poll below.

Not coincidentally, the Marlins are hosting Cuban Heritage Night at LoanDepot Park on Saturday. They will wear these uniforms for all three games of their series against the Mets (May 21-23).
