Starling Marte’s Miami Marlins tenure is likely to last only 11 months. When healthy, Marte has been the club’s everyday center fielder, and a pretty good one. But the former All-Star and Gold Glove award winner is a pending free agent. Contract extension negotiations have ended after the two sides were unable to agree to terms on a fair value for his future. With the Fish far removed from the 2021 postseason picture, it would be in the organization’s best interest to trade him in exchange for long-term contributors and financial relief.

Marte’s 2021 season stats (entering July 28): .305/.405/.451, 140 wRC+, 7 HR, 22 SB, 3.3 fWAR in 275 PA (64 G)

There are 14 MLB teams with playoff odds of 10% or higher, according to FanGraphs. Each of them presumably has given some thought to how Marte’s presence would impact them down the stretch. Many have reportedly contacted the Marlins directly about it.
