After witnessing countless trades during the three years of this latest rebuild, Marlins fans have been conditioned to wait patiently before evaluating a move. But swapping Caleb Smith, Humberto Mejía and Julio Frias for Starling Marte had a much different feel. The Marlins used the strength that is their starting pitching depth to solidify center field with a former All-Star and Gold Glove winner.
Leaving a non-competitive situation in Arizona, Marte made an instant impact on the playoff race during his Marlins debut against the Blue Jays, clubbing an eighth-inning solo home run to put the Fish ahead for good.
The 31-year-old followed that up with two more hits on Wednesday.
This is his team now, and it will continue to be through at least 2021—president of baseball operations Michael Hill all but confirmed that the club option in Marte’s contract will be exercised.
