This series will focus on each player to play for the Florida and Miami Marlins from 1993 through 2020. My intention is to sort them out into some sort of coherent order of rank.
We will be working our way up from players with the shortest Marlins careers—in terms of total plate appearances/batters faced—to those who were most productive with the franchise. In addition to that, I divided each player’s Wins Above Replacement by their PA/BF. I believe this gives a better representation of the players’ net worth. There are some surprises and I’m sure a few will disagree with the rankings. Nonetheless, we’re going to get through this together.
All the number crunching has resulted in a 15-tier system:
- Below Replacement level, less than 20 PA/BF
- Replacement level, less than 20 PA/BF
- Above Replacement level, less than 20 PA/BF
- Below Replacement level, between 20 and 74 PA/BF
- Replacement level, between 20 and 74 PA/BF
- Above Replacement level, between 20 and 74 PA/BF
- Below Replacement level, between 75 and 250 PA/BF
- Replacement level, between 75 and 250 PA/BF
- Above Replacement level, between 75 and 250 PA/BF
- Below Replacement level, between 251 and 800 PA/BF
- Replacement level, between 251 and 800 PA/BF
- Above Replacement level, between 251 and 800 PA/BF
- Below Replacement level, 800 or more PA/BF
- Replacement level, 800 or more PA/BF
- Above Replacement level, 800 or more PA/BF
The 15th tier is especially crowded, as you might have suspected (105 players).
The first 15 articles will feature seven players each, then the next 25 will feature six. The 25 after that will outline five players, and so on until the number one on the list, to be published on March 31, 2021.
