The only way it was going to be somebody else is if Mattingly was not fired. But that is insignificant because he was.

Don Mattingly was always the favorite to become the next manager of the Miami Marlins. The only question was whether he would be available.

Last week, Mattingly and the Dodgers opted to mutually part ways. Unless a deal did not financially impress Mattingly, he was inevitably going to be hired by the Marlins. Regardless, he could prove to be the type of manager the Marlins need.

Ozzie Guillen didn't work because he was too vocal. That much was made clear. Mike Redmond might not have worked because he was passive at times. But he was well liked in the clubhouse. Perhaps Mattingly could prove to be directly in the middle, forming the ideal candidate.

Mattingly had a notable amount of success in Los Angeles and has over 400 career wins to his name. But that was not good enough for the Dodgers. Even after winning three consecutive division titles, it was not enough. The Dodgers wanted a World Series title. The Marlins do too. But the expectations might not be that high initially.

Miami sought a manager with experience and Mattingly is exactly that. He has experience as a player and as a manager. He appears to know how to control a clubhouse. He has a great relationship with Owner Jeffrey Loria. All of those are necessary to have success as a manager in Miami.

Although every organization is different, the Marlins hired the best available candidate for them. They had a tendency to prefer fiery-type personalities, but that phase appears to be over. Larry Bowa interviewed twice. But he was likely choice number two in the event Mattingly was not fired by the Dodgers.

Phil Nevin does not have managerial experience. Neither Bo Porter nor Manny Acta have proven to have a notable amount of success as managers. Bud Black was not realistic. Ron Gardenhire probably was not either.

It might not have happened, but the best thing that could have happened prior to the Marlins hiring Mattingly was questioning Dee Gordon. Gordon played under Mattingly and spent the 2015 campaign in Miami's clubhouse. He knew whether Mattingly would be a good fit or not. But even if Gordon suggested pursuing another manager, the Marlins might have hired Mattingly anyway. The appeal simply could have been too great.

Now that a manager is in place, it is important to remember a manager can only do so much. Yes, making lineups and monitoring pitchers are both significant. But it is ultimately up to the players to produce.

Miami has multiple holes to fill. The club needs starting pitching depth. At the very least, a right-handed platoon partner for Justin Bour at first base could be ideal. Now that the manager is in place, the attention needs to turn to the roster. How does it need to be adjusted? What needs to be done for the Marlins to be competitive within the National League East in 2016?

Mattingly should have success in Miami. He is well-liked and has Jose Fernandez and Giancarlo Stanton headlining his 25-man roster. But now, we have to wait and see how the roster will shape up. The moves made between now and February will determine how the Marlins perform next season.

According to a source close to the situation, the Marlins have hired the former Dodgers manager to take over the clubhouse.

According to Molly Knight of Vice Sports, the Miami Marlins will be hiring Don Mattingly and may have already signed him to a contract by this point. According a source close to the situation, Mattingly has already agreed to a four-year contract with the Marlins, but the team may not announce anything officially until after the World Series is complete.

Don Mattingly had previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers for five seasons and posted a 446-363 record. The Dodgers won the NL West three out of the five years in which Mattingly managed the club, but there was a sense that he was disappointing due to the Dodgers' overwhelming available resources. The Dodgers never advanced to a World Series under Mattingly despite a huge surplus of talent both from the minors and from money spent on their roster.

The Marlins will now stake some amount of their next four years to Mattingly despite the fact that owner Jeffrey Loria has not stuck to one single manager for more than two years since Fredi Gonzalez was the team's leader from 2007 to early 2010. The Fish could afford to go after a more expensive name like Mattingly since the club recently had Ozzie Guillen's contract from back in 2012 finally run its course by the end of the 2015 season. Right now, the Marlins still have two years left on Mike Redmond's contract extension from before last season, which was signed just seven months before Loria fired him for the team's slow start.

There is some thought that Miami may have more patience with Mattingly, a former Yankees great whom Loria respects as a fan of the team. Of course, at the same time, the last former Yankee who took the reigns in south Florida was ousted fairly quickly; Joe Girardi famously won Manager of the Year for taking a surprising post-fire sale Marlins team to 78 wins in 2006, but was fired because of his contentious relationship with Loria. Mattingly is more of a soft-spoken general as compared to Girardi, but if any conflict grows between him and the owner, Loria probably will not hesitate to terminate him either.

The coaching staff behind Mattingly has not been decided. The Marlins have Perry Hill still under contract, but the remaining staff appears to be wide open and on its way out if necessary. The team may not retain any of the other members of the staff simply to allow Mattingly to help shape his own bench. The Dodgers do not plan on preventing any of the old coaching staff from leaving for new jobs, including long-time Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt.

Miami and Don Mattingly have continued their talks to bring the manager to south Florida since the official interview on Monday. A deal is looking more likely by the hour.

Preston Wilson may have had many successful years for the Fish as both a player and commentator, but he has ties to this year's World Series that date back as far as 1986.

A slump, a demotion to the minor leagues, and a less than spectacular comeback pretty much sums up the 2015 season for Marcell Ozuna after a breakout campaign in 2014.

Giancarlo Stanton hit 27 home runs this season, but they all came before the All-Star Break as he went down with a broken hand at the end of June, and never returned. After the injury, production from right field was limited.

Baseball America has updated Miami's top prospects list, and there has been some movement near the top.

Former Marlin Andrew Miller was awarded the Mariano Rivera American League Reliver of the Year before game two last night. Miller had 36 saves and a 2.04 ERA in 2015.

The Nationals look set to hire Bud Black as their next manager.
Larry Bowa is no longer a candidate after agreeing to return as Philadelphia's bench coach Tuesday.

Cross Larry Bowa off the list of candidates to become the next Marlins manager. According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, Bowa agreed to return to Philadelphia as the club's bench coach Tuesday.

Bowa's decision likely indicates the Marlins are currently negotiating a deal with Don Mattingly.

Miami started its managerial search immediately after the season ended and Bowa was quickly connected to the job. He was eventually asked to return for a second interview, however the second meeting came while the Dodgers were still playing in the National League Division Series. Once Los Angeles and Mattingly mutually parted ways, Bowa might not have still been a candidate.

Mattingly, since opting to move on, has been considered the favorite for the Marlins managerial job. He is said to have a good relationship with Owner Jeffrey Loria and has helped the Dodgers win the National League West for the last three seasons. Mattingly reportedly met with Marlins officials Monday, and according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, the next step in the process will likely be "ironing out a deal."

Since the Marlins appear to feel Mattingly would be an ideal fit, working out a deal should not prove to be notably challenging. Mattingly was under contract for 2016 and was set to make $1.6 million next season. The Dodgers might be able to save the entire salary, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman notes, and Mattingly's 2016 deal should at least be partially offset by the Marlins.

Mattingly made $1.5 million in 2015 and if Miami feels the former Yankee would thrive in South Florida, he likely will not be deemed too expensive. The length of the deal and certain clauses might have to be discussed, though. Since Miami has been quick to fire managers in the past, Mattingly might request some form of an opt-out clause or at least a deal that includes guaranteed money.

Although Mattingly and the Dodgers both agreed to move forward, the Marlins' interest in Mattingly could have factored into that decision. If that was the case, the Marlins might have to send at least one minor league player to Los Angeles in exchange for Mattingly's services.

Mattingly will likely manage the Marlins in 2016. But the minor details might prevent a deal from getting done quickly.

Mattingly is expected to meet with Marlins officials today.

Don Mattingly is interviewing with the Marlins Monday, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Miami is unlikely to announce any hire until the World Series concludes. If the interview goes well, Mattingly, considered the favorite for the job, could be hired immediately. However, the Marlins could also interview other candidates moving forward.

After he and the Dodgers mutually parted ways at the end of last week, Mattingly emerged as the favorite to land the Marlins job. He reportedly has a great relationship with Owner Jeffrey Loria and led the Dodgers to three consecutive National League West division titles.

Since the Marlins informed Dan Jennings he would not manage in 2016, the club has been actively searching for a new manager. Phil Nevin, Bo Porter, Manny Acta and Larry Bowa are among the other candidates for the job.
