The Miami Marlins fell to the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in the first game of the three game series on Friday night. Tom Koehler pitched seven innings, but Miami's offense struggled.

Entering the series tied for first place in the National League East with the Atlanta Braves, the Miami Marlins fell to the Braves 3-2 in the first game of the three game series on Friday night.

Facing Braves starter Julio Teheran, the Marlins were able to take a quick lead in the bottom of the first. Ed Lucas, who got the start at second base for Miami, singled with one out, and Giancarlo Stanton followed that with a two-run home run to right field to give the Marlins an early two run edge.

Atlanta's offense couldn't rally against Marlins starter Tom Koehler until the sixth inning, when Chris Johnson singled to left field to make it a one run contest. Koehler subsequently recorded his third double play of the night by getting Andrelton Simmons to line out to second base.

Despite a rising pitch count, Manager Mike Redmond stuck with Koehler in the top of the seventh. Teheran opened the inning with a double, and after Jason Heyward tied the game with an RBI triple to left field, Atlanta took the lead on a B.J. Upton sacrifice fly.

In his seven innings, Koehler gave up seven hits and three runs while walking four and striking out five.

The Marlins couldn't score against Teheran in seven and a third innings, and an Adeiny Hechavarria eighth inning single broke a streak of nine consecutive batters retired.

Chris Hatcher and Dan Jennings both pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Koehler, but Miami struggled against Atlanta's bullpen. Craig Kimbrel closed the game for the Braves.

The Miami Marlins open a three game series with the Atlanta Braves on Friday night at Marlins Park. Tom Koehler will be on the mound for the Marlins.

After winning both games against the Washington Nationals on the road, the Miami Marlins begin a three game series with the Atlanta Braves on Friday night at Marlins Park. The Red Sox swept the Braves, putting the Marlins and Braves tied for first place atop the National League East heading into the weekend.

Pitching Matchup

PROJ ERA

FIP

ERA

MARLINS

BRAVES

ERA

FIP

PROJ ERA

4.63

4.35

3.10

Koehler

Teheran

1.77

3.64

3.52

Koehler's last start against the Brewers was his worst, statistically speaking, of the season. In five innings, he gave up seven runs while striking out seven. Koehler didn't issue any walks, but he didn't have his best command and left pitches high in the strike zone which a productive lineup took advantage of.

Koehler pitched against the Braves in April, going six and a third innings while yielding two runs and striking out eight.

Julio Teheran pitched six scoreless innings in his last outing against the Rockies, walking one and striking out seven. Teheran faced the Marlins earlier in the season and gave up one run in seven innings while walking one and striking out eight.

Lineups

Today's Lineups

ATLANTA BRAVES

MIAMI MARLINS

Jason Heyward - RF

C.
Derek Dietrich gets the day off for the Marlins with Ed Lucas starting at second base. Miami's offense was sufficient in the two games against the Nationals, and production from the bottom of the order likely will be necessary in order to stay competitive with Atlanta.

Atlanta's lineup has several power hitters, making it key for the Marlins' starters to keep the ball down.

Notes

-Can the Marlins score against Teheran? Teheran is among the many young and talented arms the Braves have, and has gone six or more innings in all but one of his starts.

-Will Miami take advantage of the opportunity? The Marlins, with a successful series, could be atop the NL East standings come Monday.

Bold Prediction: Braves def. Marlins 5-0
