The Miami Marlins snatched victory from the jaws of defeat on Saturday night against the New York Mets. After falling behind 5-1 early, the Marlins used home runs by Giancarlo Stanton ans Jarrod Saltalamacchia to turn the tables on the Mets.

In the early going, Saturday night had an all too familiar look: the Marlins trailing a division opponent on the road needing their bullpen to keep the game within reach until (and if) the bats could come to the rescue.

Kevin Slowey, making his second start of the season, was unable to stifle the Mets' bats. He left the game after four largely ineffective innings, with the Marlins trailing 5-1, handing the game over to a succession of middle relievers, starting with Brad Hand.

The Marlins bats finally awakened in the sixth inning, starting with a 2-run homer by Giancarlo Stanton which drove in Marcell Ozuna and increased Stanton's MLB RBI lead to 29 RBIs. It was at this point that Mets starter Jenrry Mejia imploded, giving up a walk and two singles, including an RBI single by Adeiny Hechavarria which drove Mejia from the game. Reed Johnson closed out the Marlins 5-run sixth inning with a 2 RBI double off of Mets reliever Carlos Torres.

The Marlins bullpen, which had been having a rough go of it so far in 2014, came through in a big way on Sarurday night. Hand, Dan Jennings, Mike Dunn and Steve Cishek combined to pitch six innings while only giving up one unearned run.

The game remained tied at 6 apiece through the end of nine innings. Jarrod Saltalamacchia led off the top of the 10th inning by hitting a shot off of Mets closer du jour Kyle Farnsworth over the right field wall. The ball bounced back onto the field, but was correctly ruled a home run. That run would be all Steve Cishek would need as he retired the Mets in the bottom of the 10th while only giving up a walk on a questionable ball 4 call.

The Marlins will look to win their first road series on Sunday as they send Tom Koehler to the mound for the series finale against the Mets in New York. The Marlins will then fly back to Miami and take Monday off before starting a home series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.

The Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets 7-6 in game two of the three game series on Saturday night. Jarrod Saltalamacchia's tenth inning home run gave the Marlins a late lead.

Coming off of a loss in which they blew a late lead on Friday, the Miami Marlins were able to get back in the win column with a 7-6 extra innings victory over the New York Mets on Saturday night.

Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a home run to left center field against Mets reliever Kyle Farnsworth in the top of the tenth inning to give the Marlins a 7-6 lead that closer Steve Cishek would hold on to.

Attempting to prove that he belongs in the starting rotation, Kevin Slowey struggled against New York's lineup in four innings of work. Slowey gave up five hits and five runs while walking two, striking out four, and placing Miami's offense in a position where a comeback was necessary.

Bobby Abreu took Slowey deep with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, and Lucas Duda's two-out, two RBI single in the bottom of the third provided the Mets with a lead that the bullpen couldn't hold.

Mets starter Jennry Mejia was given a 5-1 lead that was eventually lost. Miami rallied for five runs in the sixth inning, punctuated by a Giancarlo Stanton two-run home run and an Adeiny Hechavarria RBI-single.

New York reliever Carlos Torres yielded a pinch hit, two run double to Marlins pinch hitter Reed Johnson which gave Miami the lead in the sixth. But Dan Jennings struggled to throw strikes in the bottom half of the inning, and after an Adeiny Hechavarria throwing error, the Mets were able to tie the game at six.

Despite a late rally, the Marlins were just 4-for-11 with runners in scoring position on Saturday, but were helped by scorless innings of relief posted by Mike Dunn, Brad Hand, and Cishek.

The Miami Marlins will pursue another victory in the second of a three-game set versus the New York Mets. Kevin Slowey will take the mound for the Fish.

The Miami Marlins and New York Mets tangle once again in the second of a three-game set. Kevin Slowey will take the mound for just the second time in 2014 as a starter, and the last time he was here in New York, a 20-inning marathon ensued. He'll look to make things go a lot smoother versus Jenrry Mejia.

Slowey will look to shut down the Mets after they struggled for most of the night offensively versus a mediocre Henderson Alvarez performance. Meanwhile, Mejia looks to continue his stellar start after re-transitioning full-time again to starting.
