Star Jeff Mathis once again demonstrated his offensive prowess over the National League, doubling and homering to propel the Marlins to victory.

The Miami Marlins flirted with disaster yesterday. Ultimately, they concluded that losing isn't hip, tight, sick, rad, or any other one of those words kids use these days. If I sound like an elderly man, it's because I feel it.

The truth is that every loss takes its toll on me, to the point where I feel as though my aging has begun to accelerate. At the start of the season, I was youthful and exuberant. Today, I'm old, I have four children whom I despise, and I work a job that brings me no pleasure.

Thankfully, our universe is governed by Newtonian principals, so winning baseball games reverses this process in opposite fashion. I am ever so slightly less cynical right now. Imagine how I'll feel after a winning season.

The Marlins' Best Hitters Are Mathis, Lucas, Hechavarria, and Solano*

If you just threw up in your mouth reading that headline, it means that you possess functioning cognitive skills. Relax, it was just a shameless attempt to make you foam at the mouth and type a furious comment decrying Fish Stripes as the worst blog in America.

The asterisk is critical.

Normally when Logan Morrison, Giancarlo Stanton, and Christian Yelich combine for two hits and a walk, the Marlins have conceded the game, left the ballpark, and gone out for a nice Chinese dinner.

For this one day, however, the Marlins were led not by the talent, but by the black hole of talent. The players who lack talent so much that they actually suck the talent out of good players. We reached the event horizon. Jeff Mathis, the .198 hitter, hit his third home run of the year, and doubled in another run for good measure. Adeiny Hechavarria and Ed Lucas each batted in runs. Donovan Solano also tied the game on a double.

*Should every other hitter on the team be swept up in a tornado.

The Giants Perfectly Execute Their Master Plan

The 2013 San Francisco Giants are not the same team that won the World Series last year. Angel Pagan, Ryan Vogelsong, and Pablo Sandoval have all missed time or under-performed. Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum have given up a lot of home runs.

Despite all of this, the Giants have a talented roster and it's strange to see them in last place behind the truly horrible Colorado Rockies. The only rational explanation for this is that they don't want to win. They tried the winning thing last year, and apparently it placed too great of an emotional burden on the team. So now they've adopted the strategy of throwing games.

They brilliantly carried out this new scheme yesterday, collecting 13 total hits, but conveniently only one came with a runner in scoring position. The usually impeccable Madison Bumgarner allowed Donovan Solano to score on a wild pitch - a run that proved decisive in the game's outcome. I'd venture to say that the runs the Giants did score came entirely by accident. It can be rather difficult to not score off Tom Koehler.

I know all of this sounds rather depressing. I should clarify my thoughts. Every win is a miracle deserving of celebration. Enjoy and appreciate them, because they don't come easily. Especially when they depend on Jeff Mathis to hit well.

The Miami Marlins eked out a 6-5 win to avoid the sweep against the San Francisco Giants, thanks to clutch hitting from Donovan Solano and Jeff Mathis, of all people.

Source: FanGraphs

The Miami Marlins flirted with another loss to get them swept by the San Francisco Giants to start this 10-game home stand, but the Fish rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning. Then, after both Tom Koehler and Madison Bumgarner were knocked out of the game with sub par performances, the back-and-forth affair heated up.

Mike Dunn entered the game in the seventh inning, and the inning exploded for the Fish. Brandon Crawford led off with a home run, and backup catcher Hector Sanchez doubled in another run to put the Giants up 5-4. The Fish, however, were able to bounce back against Guillermo Moscoso, who led the bottom half of the frame with a Christian Yelich single and Donovan Solano double.

The eighth inning went by without a significant hitch for the Marlins, and the bottom half eventually sealed the deal for the team. Ed Lucas reached on a single and Jeff Mathis hit what appeared to be a soft, sinking fly ball to center field. Andres Torres, however, could not quite reach the ball and dove for it. He missed and allowed it to ricochet off of his head and into left field, and that gave Lucas enough time to score the eventual game-winning run. Mathis also got the team on the board early with a solo shot, so he provided some decent offense today.

Steve Cishek picked up his 27th save of the year and the Marlins avoided the sweep, 6-5.

The Miami Marlins are looking to avoid the sweep, with Tom Koehler on the mound versus Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants.

Get out the broom breakers, because the Miami Marlins are looking to bust up a sweep.

The Marlins have lost two oddly high-scoring games against the San Francisco Giants, so the team will look to avoid the sweep. The problem is that their matchup is a difficult one, as the Giants send the player who could be their best starter in Madison Bumgarner out against the player who is probably the Marlins' worst, Tom Koehler.

Pitching Matchup

Proj Win%

Proj ERA

FIP

ERA

Marlins

Giants

ERA

FIP

Proj ERA

Proj Win%

.391

4.99

3.99

4.62

Koehler

Bumgarner

2,73

3.05

3.27

.585

Tom Koehler has a 3.99 FIP and has done an admirable job trying to be the team's fifth starter, but his future with the team is closer to the bullpen rather than as a starter. Meanwhile, Bumgarner may have surpassed Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum as the Giants' best starter, as he has been fantastic this season. Not a good matchup for Miami.

Lineup

Order

Player

Proj wOBA vs. LHP

1

Christian Yelich

.291

2

Donovan Solano

.292

3

Giancarlo Stanton

.417

4

Logan Morrison

.327

5

Justin Ruggiano

.328

6

Ed Lucas

.302

7

Adeiny Hechavarria

.287

8

Jeff Mathis

.271

9

Pitcher

---

Justin Ruggiano's last two games have convinced manager Mike Redmond to give him a chance to play today against the lefty Bumgarner. Ruggiano had three hits in his previous start against the Kansas City Royals, and then he put up two home runs and a double in four plate appearances in the 14-10 loss to the Giants two days ago.

Notes

- I will not be around for today's game, as I'll be entertaining a friend coming over to visit.
