Despite Jacob Turner's solid start, the Marlins fell prey to their lacking bats and some heady base theft by the Cleveland Indians.

Friday night's game against the Indians was perhaps the Marlins' best showing all season. Jose Fernandez recorded 14 strikeouts, shutting out the Indians while the Marlins recorded a whopping 16 hits to win 10-0. But, as their bats cooled on Saturday, Miami continues to fall just short of four consecutive wins.

Turner's Start

Jacob Turner found himself battling through several situations on Saturday, including some critical 3-0 counts and scoring threats. For the most part, the Marlins' righty did his job well.

Turner went six innings on Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six. For most of the start, his pitches found some way to veer out of the zone. He didn't get too many 50/50 calls either, making hitting his spots even more critical.

Saturday's game marked Turner's third straight quality start. To note, he's had some control issues in those contests. In eighteen combined innings, Turner's walked seven batters.

The walk count withstanding, the 22 year old out of Saint Charles , MO, boats a sterling 2.69 ERA, coupled with a solid 1.20 WHIP in 2013.

Speed Kills

Michael Bourn and Drew Stubbs have presented problems on the base paths for sever major league teams. Saturday just happened to be the day they would hurt the Marlins.

In the top of the third inning, Bourn made his way to first base after outrunning a ground-out to Hechavarria. He would then promptly steal second. A wild pitch from Turner advanced Bourn to third base.

Then, catcher Rob Brantly, in an attempt to gun down one of the fastest men in baseball, erred on a throw to third. Instead, the ball went flying out of the infield and onto left-field territory, allowing Bourn to score relatively easily.

That's the kind of speed that the Marlins had to deal with on Saturday, the kind that has a base-runner score a run without ever hitting the balling out of the infield.

In the seventh inning, Stubbs and Bourn pulled a successful double steal on Marlins reliever Dan Jennings. Stubbs made his way to third while Bourn made it to second.

Miami watched Cleveland swipe six bags on the night, a mark made even more impressive when considering that Brantly has been gunning runners down all season.

The Miami Marlins rallied back from a 2-0 deficit and a no-hit bid by Zach McAllister and the Cleveland Indians. The Fish tied it up but could not hold on, losing 4-3.

Source: FanGraphs

(-0.191 WPA)

The Miami Marlins got down early in tonight's game versus the Cleveland Indians, but the Fish rallied back depsite an excellent start by Zach McAllister. McAllister struck out seven Marlins versus just one walk and had a no-hitter going through five innings. The FIsh were baffled through five, drawing just their lone walk as the only baserunner.

McAllister's counterpart, Jacob Turner, also had a solid start, but was a victim of misfortune and poor defense. The Indians scratched out a run in the first inning when Michael Bourn singled, stole a base, moved to third on a ground ball, then came home on a Jason Kipnis single. The misfortune came in the third inning, when Bourn once again reached base, this time on an infield single. He then stole second again, but this time he took third on a wild pitch that got by catcher Rob Brantly. Brantly then airmailed a throw to third, allowing Bourn to score. That was one of two wild pitches thrown by Turner and missed by Brantly in the inning.

But otherwise, Turner played well. He allowed six hits in six innings, but he also struck out six batters on nine swings-and-misses and gave up just two walks, thus avoiding his problems with control. He was still wild, as evidenced by the wild pitches, but it was much improved.

The Fish then came back to tie it in the sixth inning, as Brantly, Christian Yelich, and Ed Lucas combined for two runs with two singles and a double. But the party was short-lived, as Dan Jennings came in the very next frame and recorded just one out before allowing two singles, two walks, and two stolen bases (one a double steal by Bourn and Drew Stubbs) before leaving with the deciding runs scored.

The Marlins had a final chance in the ninth, as they quickly scored on a double by Logan Morrison and a single by pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs. A series of sacrifice bunts, including one that ended up a hit, put runners on second and third with one out. But two consecutive quiet outs sealed the deal aganst the Fish.

The Miami Marlins got the best pitching performance of the season by Jose Fernandez last night, Tonight, if they get half of that from Jacob Turner, they would be much obliged. The Fish face the Cleveland Indians again in the second of a three-game series.

Turner will look to shape up in this start against a top offense, because he has struggled despite good end results. He has struck out just 17 percent of batters faced versus walking 10 percent of them this past month.

Lineup
