On Thursday the Miami Marlins opened their home series against the Chicago Cubs. The Marlins started out strong with a 3-1 lead after two innings, but the Cubs picked away at the lead until it was theirs in the ninth.

Source: FanGraphs

The game thread came to a close with a resounding "The Marlins lose. Theeeeeee Marlins lose" spoken from the mouth of our leader, Michael Jong. The proclamation seemed like an appropriate close to the game. After getting the first two men on to start the inning an botched Juan Pierre bunt resulted in a fielders choice out and idle runners. Then a routine out followed by an ugly ugly ugly Giancarlo Stanton strikeout with three swinging strikes to close out the game. The Giancarlo Stanton at bat in particular could serve as a quick little summary of the Marlins 2013 season.

For most of the game, however, the Marlins remained competitive. After Kevin Slowey allowed one earned run in the first the Marlins offense fired back scoring three unanswered runs off of Edwin Jackson. Then the Cubs decided to answer the runs with one run in the fourth and then again in the sixth.

From the sixth on the game would remain tied after clean outings by Chad Qualls and Mike Dunn. Then Steve Cishek came in to pitch the ninth and on one poorly placed fastball Luis Valbuena had put the Cubs ahead by one run. The score would remain the same until the bitter end. An end that started off promising with a leadoff walk for Donovan Solano off of the typically wild Carlos Marmol, but concluded with a Giancarlo Stanton strikeout at the hands of the K happy Carlos Marmol.

The Miami Marlins stuck close with the Chicago Cubs as expected; after all, both teams are cellar-dwellers in their respective divisions. Kevin Slowey and Edwin Jackson dueled to a stalemate, with Jackson giving up too many baserunners via walks while Slowey struggled with a home run by Nate Schierholz while at the same time striking out a season's best six batters. Both starters gave up three runs in the game, with the opposing offenses doing very little outside of their scoring innings.

Fast forward to the ninth inning, when closer Steve Cishek had a chance to maintain a tied ballgame with two outs. Luis Valbuena hit his fourth home run of the season, a line drive shot that barely got into the visitor's bullpen in right field. The graze shot gave the Cubs the lead and put them in prime position to pick up the first win of the series.

But the Marlins battled back against embattled closer Carlos Marmol. Marmol failed to get a strike in six of his first seven pitches and went to eventual 3-1 counts to the first two hitters faced in the bottom of the ninth inning. Donovan Solano and Austin Kearns got on base with a walk and single respectively, and the Marlins were set with runners on first and second with no one out. At this point, the Fish had an estimated 50.2 percent chance of winning the game.

However, the Marlins collapsed after that. Juan Pierre was (rightfully) bunting on the play, but he failed to bunt properly and laid one out easily for catcher Welington Castillo to field and fire to third base to get the lead runner out. This was followed by a fly ball out by Placido Polanco and, in perhaps the worst of the offenses, a Giancarlo Stanton four-pitch strikeout that had him swinging at two sliders way out of the zone. The Marlins helped to kill their own rally and the Fish lose again, 4-3.

The Marlins will try again tomorrow night. It will be Wade LeBlanc on the mound.

Kevin Slowey has been fooling everyone with his combination of low home run rates and high strand rates, leading to a deceptively weak 1.90 ERA. Even his 3.73 FIP cannot be expected to continue, as that does not take into account his traditionally high home run rates thanks to his low ground ball rates. At any time now, Slowey's regression should be coming, and when it does, it may be difficult to swallow for Marlins fans. Still, here's hoping it does not start tonight against the Cubs.

Edwin Jackson is now playing for his eighth team in his career, and he is doing the same consistent thing he has done each of the past four seasons. He basically has decent numbers across the board on strikeouts, walks, and home runs, while at the same time accumulating workmanlike innings counts.
