The Marlins lost to Washington by seven runs Monday night, as Wade LeBlanc struggled early and the offense never really got going.

Source: FanGraphs

LeBlanc Gets Lit Up

After two encouraging outings coming into the game, Wade LeBlanc got rocked on Monday. LeBlanc went only 3 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs. Nationals second baseman Ian Desmond had two doubles off of Leblanc, and Tyler Moore and Steve Lombardozzi doubled as well. Overall, it wasn't an impressive outing for LeBlanc. He never gave the Marlins a chance to win. After LeBlanc left the game, John Maine came in and allowed three more runs. In all, the Marlins pitchers gave up sixteen hits, which is unacceptable no matter who you look at it.

Zimmermann Dominates

Jordan Zimmermann is a very good MLB starting pitcher. However, he didn't throw one complete game in all of 2012. For Zimmerman to throw a complete game against Miami should be embarrassing for the Marlins. Zimmerman only needed 103 pitches to go the distance against the Marlins. He also generated 14 groundouts and struck out six. At some point or another, the Marlins are going to have to learn how pitchers of Zimmerman's caliber.

Coghlan Shines

Chris Coghlan went 2 for 4 with an RBI single. With Miami down 10-1 in the sixth, Coghlan got a 1-0 fastball which he turned on and grounded into right to score Juan Pierre from second. This was Coghlan's first two-hit game since June 3rd of last year, so it was nice to see him do a little damage at the plate. Also, he had a couple of nice plays in the outfield. The Marlins will be thrilled if Coghlan can start to become a passable second division number two hitter, but it is more likely that Coghlan just had a decent day and he is who we think he is.

The Marlins will take on Minnesota at Target Field tomorrow at 1:10 PM EST. Yay for interleague baseball!

The Miami Marlins suffer arguably the worst loss of the season thus far, this time against the Washington Nationals. Wade LeBlanc gave up seven runs early and the Marlins' offense was buried under a big lead and Jordan Zimmermann.

Source: FanGraphs

Attendance: 15,933
Hero of the Game: Hah, that's a funny one
Goat of the Game: Wade LeBlanc (+0.366 Win Probability Subtracted, props to the game thread crew for the positive thinking!)
Play of the Game: Tyler Moore singled to left field in the first inning. Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond scored (+0.080 Win Probability Subtracted! Positives!)

The Miami Marlins put their fans through another difficult game to watch, as the Fish were taken out of the game early and eventually blown out by the Washington Nationals 10-3. The Nationals jumped on top of Marlins starter Wade LeBlanc, who pitched well in his first two starts before being rattled by the Nationals for seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings pitched. The Nationals' first six hitters reached base on five hits and one walk as LeBlanc gave up a staggering four runs in the first inning. The Marlins were lucky enough to get away with just four runs, as the Nationals' Bryce Harper was thrown out at third base by Chris Coghlan (one of his two outfield assists); the inning could have easily gone into five or six runs had the Fish not pulled out that one out.

LeBlanc in total struck out four of his 21 batters faced, continuing his trend to force strikeouts. He also allowed two walks, which was an acceptable, if not a bit large, total. Surprisingly, despite the number of runs he allowed, he did not give up a home run. This is especially strange given the fact that LeBlanc is a classic fly ball pitcher. The lone home run of the game went to Ryan Zimmerman against long reliever John Maine.

The Marlins' offense was not entirely at fault in this one, but they did not perform well versus Jordan Zimmermann of the Nationals. The Fish walked once and drew a hit-by-pitch as well, but they also struck out six times and only collected six hits. The Marlins' only "big" inning came in the sixth inning, when Juan Pierre hit a double to drive in Donovan Solano and later scored on a Chris Coghlan single. In the eighth, the Fish forced themselves aboard with three straight hits, including an RBI single by Rob Brantly. They eventually loaded the bases, only to see Pierre ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

The Marlins will look to forget this awful outing tomorrow night, as they send Alex Sanabia up to the hill to hopefully do better than he did last time.

The Miami Marlins were down two outfielders on Sunday, as Giancarlo Stanton was recovering from a sore left shoulder while Austin Kearns was hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat. Kearns has been released, but Stanton had his shoulder examined.

The Miami Marlins were lacking two outfielders on their bench on Sunday, as Austin Kearns was a late scratch due to a hospitalization for an irregular heartbeat and Giancarlo Stanton sat out a third game with a sore left shoulder. Initially, Kearns was kept overnight for observation to make sure everything was all right after he had an episode of a racing heartbeat and associated symptoms. Meanwhile, Stanton began suffering from soreness after making a diving catch against the New York Mets, and this soreness caused him to miss the Philadelphia Phillies series.

One player seems to be better, while the other player's status is unknown. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that Kearns was released from the hospital, while Stanton went to the doctor to have his shoulder examined.

"The good news is, Kearns has been discharged from the hospital," manager Mike Redmond said. "He’s on his way over [to the ballpark] but he hasn’t been cleared for baseball activities. He’s got a couple of more tests to do tomorrow. He will be here tonight. Definitely, that’s great news that he seems like he’s going to be alright."

For Kearns, that is excellent news, but he will not be available in tonight's game versus the Washington Nationals. Kearns was initially slated to start on Sunday thanks in part to Stanton's ongoing injury, but his symptoms prompted an immediate hospital visit. Hopefully he passes these supposed tests and makes a full recovery to the bench soon.

For Stanton, the shoulder issue is beginning to grow concerning, even though nothing as of now has been said. Stanton has no history with that type of injury, so it should not be a major concern of the past, but the Marlins should still be a little concerned about yet another injury. Combine that with his struggles and it could be a difficult April for him to readjust after missing some time.

The Marlins are hoping neither player will require a disabled list stint, but they will consider it for either or both if needed. Both will probably be at the stadium tonight, but neither will be available until at least tomorrow. For the Marlins' sake, Stanton had better not require DL time, because it will only serve to lengthen his already difficult start of the season.

The Marlins' LeBlanc may be the most successful non-Fernandez story on the team as of right now. Of all the starting pitchers not named Jose Fernandez on this team, only LeBlanc's 3.27 ERA matches his corresponding FIP and xFIP measurements to a decent amount. While Ricky Nolasco and Kevin Slowey teeter on impending collapses, LeBlanc and his 21.7 percent strikeout rate are keeping him and the Marlins alive in games, while the lack of home runs is similar to what he did last season. He should allow a few more dingers, but if the strikeouts and walks remain, he will still be a very good pitcher.

The Nationals will throw out Jordan Zimmermann, who dominated the Marlins in his first start but also gave up the team's first run of the season. So there's that.

The Marlins will once again be without Giancarlo Stanton, who still has a sore right shoulder, and Austin Kearns, who is still recovering from an irregular heartbeat that kept him out of Sunday's game. At least now, both Ruggiano and Coghlan will be in the lineup rather than just the hapless Coghlan. Still, the lineup looks bleak, and it might struggle badly versus the Nationals.
