No recognition in BP’s top 50, or even the “Just Missed” conversation.

The updated top-50 MLB prospects list published by Baseball Prospectus on Friday did not include any Marlins farmhands.

Although disappointing, that should’ve been anticipated.

Lewis Brinson had been among Baseball Prospectus’ preseason top 50 in 2016 (No. 15), 2017 (No. 12) and 2018 (No. 18). However, he’s now graduated from prospect eligibility.

Outfielder Monte Harrison was No. 49 on the previous edition of the list. He is providing strong production lately for Double-A Jacksonville (.312/.402/.457 over past calendar month), but there have been extended dry spells throughout the campaign that drag down the overall stats. Recognizing secondary pitches continues to be an issue, manifesting in an astonishing 38.7 strikeout rate.

Apparently, Harrison’s inconsistency caused a significant drop, as he wasn’t selected to BP’s “Just Missed” list, either.

Stay tuned for additional league-wide prospect rankings that are scheduled to be revealed by other reputable publications later in July.

Before getting carried away, keep in mind this site does a top 200 list. Still, eight out of 200 is above average!

After placing eight youngsters in Prospect 365’s preseason list, the Marlins advanced a few of them into regular major league roles.

However, breakout prospects Nick Neidert and Pablo López filled their shoes, and with the selection of toolsy outfielder Connor Scott in the first round of the 2018 MLB draft, the franchise winds up with eight reps within the midseason top 200. Blog creator Ray Butler published the new rankings in their entirety on Wednesday.

The blurbs below were also written by Butler.

OF Monte Harrison, No. 93 (preseason: No. 57)

RHP Jorge Guzman, No. 107 (preseason: No. 143)

RHP Sandy Alcántara, No. 138 (preseason: No. 92)

Let’s call a spade a spade: Yes, Alcántara throws a 70-grade fastball. It’s also flat, and the right-hander hasn’t really shown the secondary offerings that allow the premium-velocity-fastball to play to its potential. Alcántara hasn’t posted a K/9 greater than 9 since he was in High-A (in 2016, and no, his 8.1 IP stint with the Cardinals last season doesn’t count). In many organizations, Alcántara would have already been transitioned to the bullpen and would likely be in the big leagues pitching in a high-leverage role. Thankfully, the Marlins have an absolute ton of time to exhaust every option with Alcántara as a starting pitcher.

RHP Nick Neidert, No. 144 (preseason: unranked)

2B Isan Diaz, No. 163 (preseason: No. 123)

By the time it’s all said and done, prospect rankers around the world are going to be absolutely sick and tired of ranking Isan Diaz. As most of you know, Diaz is a prototypical-case of AVG vs. OBP variance. The 26.3% strikeout rate (which is numbingly consistent with his career numbers) is much more acceptable with a .368 OBP (the walk rate is 15.5%) than it is with a .239 AVG. The Marlins seem content with playing Diaz at second base, so the main mystery remaining is the untapped power most folks think the 22 year old possesses.
