Johnston was picked by the Marlins in the 17th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, and he’s been among the most productive hitters in their organization ever since. Across four different minor league levels, he owns a 131 weighted runs created-plus overall—100 represents league average—with 161 runs batted in, which leads all Marlins prospects during that span.

After the 2021 MiLB regular season, Johnston was sent by the Marlins to the Arizona Fall League. Finding out that he’d be participating was the most memorable moment of his pro career thus far.

“It was one of my goals and I met it a lot earlier than I thought I was going to,” Johnston says.

Johnston has spent the entire 2022 season with the Blue Wahoos, typically batting second or third in their lineup. He enters Saturday with a .293/.359/.454 slash line and eight home runs, ranking first on the team in games played (63) and total bases (113). With his help, Pensacola won the Southern League South Division first-half title to clinch a postseason berth. In our interview, Johnston said he’s been especially impressed by teammates right-hander Eury Pérez and catcher Paul McIntosh.

Drafted as an outfielder and later converted to a full-time first baseman, Johnston has recently begun getting occasional reps in left field again. Like so many key Marlins farmhands, the 25-year-old is eligible to be taken in the Rule 5 Draft this upcoming offseason unless he’s selected to the 40-man roster beforehand.

The Fish couldn’t overcome Lindor’s hot hitting and some tough breaks.

Miami, FL—Five days after he defeated the New York Mets in Queens, Sandy Alcantara was tasked with the same assignment on Friday night at loanDepot Park. The Marlins welcomed the Metropolitans into town as a stronger ball club than they were the last time they faced each other—Jesús Aguilar and Jesús Sánchez were reinstated from the injured list in the interim and were both in the lineup for the series opener.

After two quick outs in the top of the first, Marlin killer Francisco Lindor took Alcantara deep for his 12th home run. It was the first home run allowed by Sandy since May 11th. That blast gave the Mets an early 1-0 lead.

The Marlins got that run right back for their ace. Jon Berti led the inning off with an infield single but was picked off by Mets starter Taijuan Walker. Manager Don Mattingly challenged, but after review, the call stood. Back-to-back singles by Jazz Chisholm and Jorge Soler put runners on the corners with one out when Garrett Cooper came through with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

Sandy had been perfect aside from the Lindor homer until the 5th inning when former Marlin farmhand Mark Canha turned on a 98 mph fastball for a home run into the Recess Lounge. It was the first time Alcantara had surrendered multiple homers in the same game since May 1st against Seattle.

Just like they did in the first, the Marlins answered right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the 5th. Berti and Chisholm singled, and Soler drove in Berti with an RBI groundout, which tied the game again. Chisholm left the game in the top of the sixth with lower back spasms.

That half inning had some drama. After Thomas Nido and Brandon Nimmo reached base via infield singles, former Marlin Starling Marte dribbled one towards 2nd base. Astudillo tagged Nimmo and threw to first for the double play. After the Mets challenged, however, it was revealed that Marte beat the throw to first and Nimmo was safe due to Astudillo tagging him with an empty glove, and the ball was in his bare hand. Therefore all runners were safe.

The Marlins loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th with nobody out, but managed to score only one run on a two-out walk by Cooper, which made it 5-3.

The score remained the same the rest of the way as Miami’s three-game win streak ended. Dylan Floro made easy work of the Mets in the top of the 8th, flashing mid-90s fastball velocity for the first time all season. Jimmy Yacabonis had an impressive inning of relief as well in which he struck out the side in the 9th.

New York, NY—The Marlins’ playoff hopes continue to take a dive. Entering Saturday’s contest, their odds at making the postseason were at 3.6% according to FanGraphs. That number dropped another percentage point by the end of the night.

Coming off arguably the best start of his career in Houston, Braxton Garrett was tasked with another challenging assignment on Saturday, facing the first-place New York Mets in Queens. Things didn’t go quite as well for the young southpaw this time around.

After a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, the Mets got on the board in the second. A single and a walk set the Mets up with two men in scoring position for second baseman Jeff McNeil, who lined a base hit into right to give New York a 1-0 lead. Braxton was able to escape any further damage until the following inning.

In a deja vu moment, Francisco Lindor homered for the second game in a row to extend the Mets’ lead to 3-0. It was Lindor’s 11th home run of the season, which he hit after making a phenomenal defensive play in the top half of the inning. He was Ely Sussman’s MVP choice for this series during the Fish Stripes LIVE preview show.

Opposing Garrett was right-hander Taijuan Walker, who also came off a solid outing in which he struck out 10. After he allowed a leadoff infield single to Jon Berti, Walker retired 18 straight Marlin batters. Eventually, he walked second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to lead off the 7th.

With two gone, Avisaíl García got the Marlins on the board with an RBI double to score Chisholm, which made it 3-1. García is having easily his best offensive month of the season, improving his overall slash line from .201/.231/.282 to .230/.271/.320 since the start of June.

Dylan Floro, Jimmy Yacabonis, Richard Bleier, and Louis Head combined to keep Miami in this one, blanking the Mets the rest of the way.

The 9th inning had some drama as Edwin Diaz came in to finish the contest. Jon Berti led the inning off with a single and promptly stole 2nd for his third stolen base of the game and 18th of the season. He leads the National League in that category. With Berti on second, Chisholm struck out looking on a controversial pitch that appeared to be way inside. Chisholm was furious with home plate umpire Adam Beck, and was eventually tossed from the ballgame.

Sandy pitched 9 shutout innings, but didn’t get the win. Marlins did, though.

Miami, FL—Going into Wednesday night, the Marlins had won 5 straight games started by ace Sandy Alcantara. In those 5 starts, Sandy pitched 39 innings and allowed just 18 hits while pitching to a preternatural 0.69 ERA. Opponents slugged .191 against him in those 5 starts. All season long, Alcantara had given up 3 earned runs or more just once. To say he has been spectacular would be a woeful understatement.

He decided to impress us again. Through 3 innings, Alcantara had a shutout going, but that wasn’t the impressive part. Of the 33 pitches he threw in those 3 innings, only 3 were balls. That’s good for a 90.9 strike percentage, the highest for any starting pitcher in the first 3 innings of a game this year.

Sandy continued that trend all game long, pitching a full 9 shutout innings in this one. Final line: 9.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB. 6 SO. That makes 6 straight starts of at least 7 innings and 100 pitches thrown for Sandy.

The Nationals’ staff was able to keep Miami off the board for most of this one as well. A combination of Josiah Gray, Steve Cishek, Carl Edwards Jr. and Kyle Finnegan shut out Miami through 9 innings.

The Marlins did threaten repeatedly during Gray’s start, only to come up empty with runners in scoring position. Then against Finnegan in the bottom half of the ninth, Jon Berti and Miguel Rojas reached base to begin the inning. Unfortunately, the Marlins couldn’t manufacture a run, which meant free baseball at loanDepot.

At 105 pitches, it was thought Alcantara could become the first Marlin ever to pitch more than 9 full innings in a game. Alas, manager Don Mattingly elected to go with lefty Tanner Scott to pitch the top of the 10th. Postgame, Donnie told reporters that had it been a postseason game, he would have let Sandy pitch the 10th.

Scott promptly gave up a bloop single to allow the placed runner to score, which gave the Nationals a 1-0 lead.

With Jazz Chisholm placed on 2nd base, Miami had the meat of their order up to try and drive him in in the bottom of the 10th. After a Cooper lineout, pinch hitter Willians Astudillo came through with a flare into right field to score Chisholm, which tied the game.

Chisholm was initially called out on the play—home plate umpire Nestor Ceja said Jazz slid around the plate and never came back to touch it. After further review, the call was overturned due to Keibert Ruiz illegally blocking the plate. The game was tied at 1-1. Also crucial to note, Astudillo reached 2nd on the throw home.

Miami improved to 24-30 while Washington fell to 21-37. Tanner Scott got the win (smh) while Tanner Rainey endured the loss.

The Marlins have now picked up consecutive victories following their 90-minute, closed-door meeting. The Miami Herald reported earlier on Wednesday that some veteran players weren’t happy with some of the younger players’ behavior and rule-following. After speaking with Miguel Rojas and Garrett Cooper pregame, I was able to confirm that report. Also, another theme of the meeting related to Rojas’s perception of a lack of hustle from some players.

“There are a couple of things and rules that individuals and players need to get better at,” Rojas said to a group of reporters in the Marlins clubhouse, “like running a ball out to first base and being here on time. Just sort of a reminder.”

Cooper added: “Not all people have to like each other on this team—not everyone’s going to be friends 24/7.” He went on to say that while it’s important for teammates to get things off their chests, “There’s things where pointing a finger at someone like ‘who did this, who did that,’ was a lot of nonsense to me.”

It seems like the Marlins have moved on from the kerfuffle, and can focus more of their energy on playing baseball after clearing the air with each other. They have 108 games to go.

They will go for the sweep Thursday night with left-hander Trevor Rogers on the bump. Stephen Strasburg is expected to be activated off the injured list by Washington to make his highly anticipated season debut.

Sandy was brilliant, while the Marlins offense did just enough

Miami, FL—Coming off a near-impeccable performance over the weekend in Atlanta, Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara took the mound for the series opener on Thursday night against the San Francisco Giants. While Miami still didn’t provide Alcantara with much run support, the Marlins were able to come away with their 21st win of the season.

Even though the Marlins didn’t take batting practice on Thursday afternoon as their team flight didn’t arrive back from Colorado until around 5 a.m. local time, the offense was able to give their ace an early run. Jacob Stallings came through with an RBI single off Alex Wood in the bottom of the 2nd inning to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

That’s all Sandy needed in this one. In addition to recording his 500th career strikeout, he went 7 shutout innings and allowed 3 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 8. He continues to lead the Majors in innings pitched (74.2)—averaging more than 100 pitches per start this season—and is potentially in the running to start the All-Star Game in Los Angeles this summer.

Sandy mentioned postgame that he didn’t know he had reached the #500 milestone during the game. He told reporters that he was puzzled as to why the team asked him to throw the ball back into the dugout.

The Marlins gave Sandy some more insurance in the bottom of the 6th. RBI hits by Jesús Aguilar and Miguel Rojas extended Miami’s lead to 3-0.

Trevor struggles, Marlins fail to capitalize in late innings.

MIAMI, FL—The last time Ronald Acuña Jr. played at loanDepot Park, he suffered a season-ending injury on July 10th, 2021. Acuña tore his ACL leaping for a fly ball in right field, and had to be carted off the field. Less than a year later, he and the Atlanta Braves came back to Miami on Friday night at full strength.

In his first at-bat, Acuña did what he does best: hit the ball hard. He led off the game with a ringing double that left his bat at 113.8 mph. He then scored on an Ozzie Albies single, which gave the Braves an early 1-0 lead. A couple of batters later, former Marlin Marcell Ozuna cranked one over the left field wall for his 8th home run of the season, extending the Braves lead to 3-0.

That was just the first of 3 home runs that Trevor allowed on Friday.

Brian Anderson ripped a double to left, and came home on a Bryan De La Cruz base hit, which trimmed the deficit to 4-1.

Trevor’s struggles with the long ball continued in the 3rd inning, as Travis d’Arnaud deposited one into the left field seats. That was the 6th home run Rogers has allowed this year in just 35 1⁄3 innings pitched. In 2021, he allowed 6 home runs (133 IP). Keep in mind that the MLB homer rate overall is down from year to year.

The Marlins showed some more life in the 6th. After a Jesús Aguilar single, Jorge Soler belted his team-leading 8th home run, trimming the deficit to 5-3. He’s now on pace to go deep 34 times this season.

Miami had plenty of opportunities for more in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings, but failed to capitalize. The club went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, and left 9 men on.

Louis Head kept the game within reach while eating valuable innings for the Marlins. He contributed three scoreless frames, which required a career-high 59 pitches. He is unlikely to be available for the rest of the weekend.

The Braves bullpen did their job, keeping Miami off the board the rest of the way. They won by a final score of 5-3. Charlie Morton earned the win, while Trevor Rogers received the loss. Will Smith closed it out for Atlanta. The Marlins fall to 17-21, while the Braves improve to 18-21.

During the second half of the game, the Marlins capitalized on all of Washington’s mistakes.

It was not Max Meyer on the mound for Miami at loanDepot Park on Tuesday. Rather, right-hander Cody Poteet made his first start of the season against the lowly Washington Nationals. So far in 2022, Poteet had thrown 16.1 innings out of the bullpen, and allowed just one earned run. He went up against Joan Adon in the second game of the series.

The Marlins beat the Nats by a score of 5-1, and have now won their first 5 contests against Washington. It’s been more than a decade since the last streak like that in Miami’s favor.

Before the game, Marlins manager Don Mattingly hinted at Poteet being pretty stretched out already, having gone multiple innings in most of his appearances, including 4 shutout innings pitched on May 10th in Arizona. In his first start of the season and the 8th of his career, Poteet excelled once again. He threw 4 2⁄3 innings, during which he surrendered one 1 hit, 1 walk, no runs, and struck out 4.

Poteet was surprisingly pulled at 54 pitches, resulting in a final line unlike anything we’ve ever seen from a Marlins starter. Postgame, Donnie said Poteet was dealing with a thumbnail issue, and that’s why he had to leave the game a little early.

With one man on base for the Nats, Anthony Bender came into the game and got the final out of the 5th, stranding his inherited runner and preserving the scoreless tie. During the pitching change, the fire alarm at loanDepot Park went off, causing a small delay in the action.

Perhaps the alarm was a warning for what would happen in the bottom of the fifth, as Miguel Rojas led off the inning with a blast to left, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. The ball left his bat at 102.7 mph and traveled 394 feet.

After Jesús Aguilar smacked a single with two outs, it was the Nationals’ turn to go to the bullpen. Former Marlin Steve Cishek came into the game to finish the fifth, retiring Garrett Cooper and completing Joan Adon’s line.

After entering the game for an injured Bryan De La Cruz (right forearm contusion), Jesús Sánchez blasted a home run to right-center in the bottom of the sixth, extending Miami’s lead to 2-0. The homer was particularly welcome since Sanchez had been in the midst of a major slump, slashing .095/.111/.285 in his last 19 games.

For the third inning in a row, Miami scored again in the 7th. After Rojas led the inning off with a ringing double, Erik González reached on an E1 trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Then, both baserunners scored on multiple throwing errors by the Nationals, extending Miami’s lead to 4-0.

The Nationals were able to manufacture a run in the top of the eighth, but Tanner Scott mitigated the damage, keeping the score 4-1.

Catcher Jacob Stallings got that run right back for the Marlins, adding an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th.

Scott came back out in the top of the 9th and struck out Yadiel Hernández, but after walking Keibert Ruiz, Scott was pulled in favor of Cole Sulser. He finished the game for the Marlins, as they won 5-1. Miami improved to 17-19 on the season, and 5-0 against the Nationals, who fell to 12-26. Anthony Bender was the winning pitcher, Joan Adon the loser.
