The Marlins broke out the brooms with major contributions from their two youngest active players.

Looking to secure their second series sweep of the season and ensure a happy—albeit LONG—flight out to the Bay Area, the Marlins looked to their number one prospect, Eury Pérez, for some matinee baseball. He provided the filth, and the hitters did the rest.

Eury wasted no time as he worked a 10-pitch, 1-2-3 first inning, capped off with a strikeout of the scorching hot Jeimer Candelario. He worked around a walk and a single in the second with two strikeouts and a fielders choice, but his pitch count climbed to 36.

The Marlins provided some early run support in the bottom half of the second as Bryan De La Cruz crushed an up-and-away fastball up, up, and away over the wall in dead center for his fourth home run of the year. 102.4 MPH, 24 DEG, 402 FT. He extends his career-long hitting streak to twelve games, which ties Luis Arraez for the longest by a Marlin this season.

He paid for a mistake in the top of the fourth as now-certified Marlin-killer Jeimer Candelario sent a middle-away fastball into the seats beyond the right-center field wall for a solo home run to make it 2-1. Dominic Smith then hit a two-out double but would go no further as Eury induced a groundout from Jake Alu to end the threat. But do you know what is better than a one-run lead in the ninth? That’s right: a two-run lead in the ninth!
Recapping the Marlins’ 12th consecutive one-run win in the rubber match in Phoenix.

Looking to swipe another series win from the Diamondbacks and head back home at .500, the Marlins sent Edward Cabrera to the mound for the rubber match in Phoenix.
Recapping games one and two in the Valley of the Sun.

Having squeaked out a win in a marathon game Sunday in Chicago, the Marlins brought their exhausted bullpen to the desert to face the 19-15 Diamondbacks. With Zac Gallen on the bump for the opposition, it went pretty much exactly as you would’ve expected. They then went on to face the right-handed rookie making just his second appearance in the big leagues, Brandon Pfaadt. (Pronounced: \FOUGHT\) Let’s break it all down.

“We have to play cleaner baseball if we want to win big league games,” Skip Schumaker said postgame.

Riding on the heels of a crushing sweep at the hands of the Braves, the Marlins made a quick turnaround as they made their way up to the North Side of Chicago for three straight afternoon games in Wrigleyville. Sweeping the Cubs at home less than a week ago surely boosted their confidence heading into the series opener as Edward Cabrera toed the rubber against Justin Steele. Alas, after some mental mistakes on the basepaths and physical mistakes on the mound, they dropped their fourth game in a row, sending them below .500.

The game started rough for Edward as leadoff man Nico Hoerner got on base with a single. Cabrera threw over once before looking in to pitch to Dansby Swanson. Before he could even throw that first pitch, Nico was dancing off first and made it halfway to second, which alarmed Eddy and caused him to step off and use his second disengagement before even throwing a pitch. A few pitches later, Nico did it again, and Edward had no choice but to throw behind him and try to pick him off. He was unsuccessful and was charged with a balk, the first disengagement balk charged to a Marlins pitcher this season. He then went to third on Jacob Stallings’ third passed ball of the season and scored on a single by Seiya Suzuki.

The score would remain 1-0 all the way through the top of the fifth inning as Justin Steele kept Marlins hitters at bay. In that inning, Bryan De La Cruz hit a leadoff single and went to second a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Stallings, but none of it mattered as Nico Hoerner made a leaping catch on a liner by Garrett Hampson, and DLC was caught in between second and third. A lineout double play to end the inning. After the game, Skip Schumaker clearly pointed out how much these mental mistakes cost the team games. He took the blame for not stressing the issue in the clubhouse, but in the end, the onus is on the players to keep their wits about them. This has been a theme recently, and it has to stop if they want to win games.

As for the physical mistakes, those came in the form of two curveballs left out over the middle of the plate by Eddy that resulted in a single and a two-run home run to put the Cubs up 3-0. A strikeout of Seiya Suzuki would end both the inning and Edward's outing.

The rest of the game was business as usual for both sides. The Marlins pushed across a run in the sixth inning to avoid the shutout. Tanner Scott nearly pitched a clean eighth inning, but Garrett Hampson slipped in his pursuit of a Cody Bellinger fly ball, resulting in a double. Two batters later, Scott allowed an RBI single to Team Israel legend Matt Mervis—his first hit and RBI in the big leagues added an insurance run for the Cubbies.

The blowout stretches out the Braves’ NL East lead and secures another series win for them over the Fish.

This quickly became one of those games that you want to forget about and move on from. But when all was said and done, the Marlins showed some encouraging signs, and there are plenty of interesting things to look at in this game. Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly (NOT in chronological order).

The Good

The offense showed up for small stretches in this game and gave us something to look forward to once these Braves leave town. Jesus Sanchez went 3-for-4 with a home run off of left-hander Dylan Lee, his first homer off of a lefty since 2021.

Nick Fortes started to heat up as he sent two balls the opposite way en route to a 2-for-4 evening. And with the game out of reach late, Skip sent Xavier Edwards and Peyton Burdick out to rest the starters. It jumped up to 5.81 by the time he left the game. Everything unraveled for him in the second inning as he allowed a grand slam to Marcell Ozuna, who entered this game hitting .111. Then he gave up a two-run home run to Michael Harris II, followed by a walk to Acuña, who scored on an RBI double by Ozzie Albies.
Here’s the music that accompanies Marlins players when they step up the plate or take the mound in Miami.

It’s back! With the help of Luis Dorante Jr., who provided us with the full list of walk-up songs to begin the season, we are proud to bring back the Miami Marlins walk-up song playlist.

This article is tailor-made for folks like me who love a good walk-up song. With the Marlins no longer publicly displaying the team’s musical choices (they used to here), Fish Stripes is putting in the effort to maintain an unofficial playlist. We will try to keep the list as accurate and up-to-date as possible. Feel free to shout at us if you find a mistake!

This alphabetized list contains separate sections for pitchers (entrance songs) and position players (walk-up songs).

Listen closely the next time one of the bullpen guys has their name announced. Some players have multiple walkup songs. Multiple players have specified start times for their songs. Where not listed, the song starts at 0:00.

The Fish drop the final game of the homestand in extras.

With the series win in the bag, the Marlins hoped that lefty Trevor Rogers would continue off the solid outing against the Diamondbacks from last Friday. Things looked good early on but quickly spiraled out of control as Trev had to leave with an injury. The bullpen locked things down and kept the game close all the way into extra innings, but with a taxed bullpen and no arms left, Skip was forced to make one of the arms wear it and take the loss. Let’s break it down.

Trev worked around some trouble early in the top of the first, issuing a single to Thairo Estrada and a walk to Darin Ruf, both on full counts. A gorgeous back pick by Jacob Stallings, followed by a strikeout, would strand the runner at second. He cruised through the next two innings, retiring seven straight with two strikeouts.

Things unraveled in the fourth inning as Trevor was removed from the game after allowing a single to Wilmer Flores and a run-scoring double to Darin Ruf. We were later informed that he was removed with left forearm tightness. He tried to talk his way into continuing, but Skip and Mel were not willing to let him push through something unnecessarily. He said his arm feels fine and will get an MRI later today.

George Soriano was given as much time as he needed to warm up and face the heart of the Giants’ order. He gave up a single to J.D. Davis to put two on with no outs, then retired both David Villar and Mike Yastrzemski. He allowed a walk to Joey Bart after a questionable ball-two call to load the bases, but slammed the door with a ground ball to shortstop to end the inning and leave all the ducks on the pond. He went on to pitch a scoreless fifth inning to keep the score 1-0.

The offense was able to push across the tying run in the bottom of the fifth as Garrett Cooper delivered a two-out RBI single to score Garrett Hampson, who singled and stole second base. They were able to load the bases, but they were all stranded by a Bryan De La Cruz groundout.

The teams remained deadlocked at one all the way through the tenth inning as both teams were unable to push a run across. Following the two-out walk in the top of the fourth, the Marlins bullpen retired the next eight batters in order before Andrew Nardi allowed a hit-by-pitch and a walk with one out in the seventh. He got LaMonte Wade Jr. to ground out for the second out and was replaced by Huascar Brazoban with runners on second and third. Brazoban induced a lineout to strand a pair and keep the game knotted at one. He would go on to retire all five batters he faced in 1 2⁄3 innings of work. Tanner Scott replaced him with one out in the ninth and continued the impressive stretch by the ‘pen, tossing 1 2⁄3 scoreless innings in the ninth and tenth, stranding the ghost runner at third in the tenth.

Devin Smeltzer was handed the ball for the top of the eleventh, with Dylan Floro and A.J. Puk having pitched on back-to-back days. Things went south quick, fast, and in a hurry, as Smeltzer gave up a pair of two-run home runs to Michael Conforto and Mike Yastrzemski.

On the offensive side, it began to feel a lot like last season as the Marlins left two men on in the ninth and left the bases loaded in both the tenth and eleventh innings. Although, they were able to push a single run across in the eleventh when Jon Berti led off with an RBI double to score ghost-runner Avi Garcia from second. When all was said and done, the Giants had scored five runs on seven hits, and the Marlins had scored two runs on ten hits.

A late comeback powers the Marlins to a series-opening W.

Coming off back-to-back series wins and sitting at .500, the Marlins looked to their best pitcher so far, Jesus Luzardo. Coming off a three-earned-run victory in Philadelphia, the local lefty wound up with another three-earned-run game, this time a no-decision.

Luzardo cruised through the first inning and two-thirds, including three strikeouts and a flyout by his 9u teammate, David Villar. But after causing Joey Bart to send his bat into the netting above the Marlins dugout, he gave up back-to-back doubles to score a run and make it 1-0 in the second. His pitch count continued to climb as a single, and a walk came around to score on another two-out double, this time by the aforementioned former teammate, David Villar. 3-0 Giants in the third, and it was starting to look grim.

Logan Webb was having his way with the Marlins' offense to this point, having retired the first six in order. Jesus Sanchez smoked a double to begin the third inning and came around to score on a single by Jazz Chisholm Jr. to put the Fish on the board. They continued trying to chip away as the game progressed, but besides a single run in the sixth inning, they were unable to untangle Logan Webb. (So proud of that line. Had to use it twice.)

With Luzardo at 100 pitches and runners on first and second following a single and a walk, Skip came out to the mound to take him out of the game. He handed the ball to Andrew Nardi with the hopes that he could limit the damage. Two pitches later, Nardi rolled a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. He has stranded all 8 of the runners he has inherited so far this season. Luzardo gave him a tip of the cap postgame and called his double play, “huge; those guys in the bullpen have been nails lately.”

Luzardo’s final line: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 100/65 Pitches/Strikes.

Nardi remained in the game and tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning, even shaking off a shattered bat off his foot for the final out. He said it just grazed him, and he was alright. Dealing with lingering back issues, which he suspects might be related to the artificial turf in loanDepot park, and having never recorded a hit off Webb in his career, Soler seemed like an odd choice. It was almost meaningless as it looked like the first base umpire called a balk on Webb to bring home the tying run, but after discussion, they ruled that there was no balk. Soler didn’t care; he sent a cement-mixer slider from Webb way out over the wall in deep center field for a go-ahead pinch-hit two-run home run.
106.1 MPH, 24 DEG, 413 FT, HR in 22 ballparks.

He played a game of cat-and-mouse with Sosuke Genda, who showed bunt from the moment he stepped into the box. Genda won the battle as he laid down a sacrifice bunt to the right side to move the runners up 90 feet.
Taisei Ota worked around a two-out hit-by-pitch to keep Mexico off the board in the top of the ninth inning. Mexico sent the veteran right-hander from the St. Louis Cardinals, Giovanny Gallegos, to the mound to try and close it out. Shohei Ohtani wasted no time—on Gallegos’ first pitch, he cracked a double to left-center field and swing the momentum entirely in Japan’s favor. As he arrived safely at second base, he turned to his dugout and raised his arms in the air, which sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Masataka Yoshida followed with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Ukyo Shuto, one of the fastest baserunners in Japanese baseball. He showed off his elite speed as Munetaka Murakami finally broke out of his WBC slump, sending a fly ball off the wall in left-center field. Ohtani rounded third with his hands held to the sky and Shuto breathing down his neck. The entire Japan dugout greeted them as they crossed the plate, and the celebration was on. The comeback was complete. The score was 6-5, and Samurai Japan was moving on to the championship.

Mexico Manager Benji Gil had some excellent quotes in the postgame press conference: “Japan moves on, but the world of baseball won today...We lost, but we were not beaten. We were not beaten. They bested us. But for Mexico, it was a victory. It was a victory for the Mexican baseball.”

As Gil finished his press conference, he received a well-deserved round of applause from some reporters.

Samurai Japan remains undefeated in this tournament and is set to face off against Team USA in the championship game tonight at 7 PM. The listed starters are Merrill Kelly and Shota Imanaga, but the assumption is that Yu Darvish will replace Imanaga very early in the game and get most of the innings. There is a chance Shohei Ohtani will pitch in relief, depending on when his spot in the order comes up and whether he has time to go out and warm up.
