Earning Their Stripes: Week 21

Here’s what happened in the Marlins organization during the second-to-last week of the 2021 MiLB season.

The Arizona Fall League returns on October 13 with a 30-game schedule. Breakout star Troy Johnston has confirmed his participation. We’re still awaiting the names of six more Marlins players, likely those who competed at the High-A level or above in 2021. They’ll be assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox.

Right-hander Jesús Zabaleta—a native of Cartagena—was selected in the Colombian professional baseball league’s rookie draft. Only 17 years old and without any MiLB experience, I doubt he’ll be used in any official games this winter.

Marlins minor league affiliates went a combined 6-4 last week:

  • Triple-A—Memphis 3, Jacksonville 5; Memphis 1, Jacksonville 7 (F/6); Memphis 6, Jacksonville 7; Memphis 2, Jacksonville 3; Memphis 6, Jacksonville 5
  • D.R. Rookie—DSL Marlins 4, DSL Athletics 6; DSL Athletics 1, DSL Marlins 2; DSL Marlins 2, DSL Dodgers Bautista 7; DSL Dodgers Bautista 9, DSL Marlins 7; DSL Twins 0, DSL Marlins 7

Triple-A Jacksonville (73-52)

Tuesday’s starting pitcher RHP Nick Neidert: 4.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR on 79 pitches

Wednesday’s starting pitcher LHP Daniel Castano: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 HR on 78 pitches

Thursday’s starting pitcher RHP Pablo López (rehab): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K on 31 pitches

Friday’s starting pitcher RHP Max Meyer: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, 1 HR on 73 pitches

Saturday’s starting pitcher LHP Braxton Garrett: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 HR on 61 pitches

Pablo López’s rehab start was supposed to be the top storyline on Thursday night. He looked fine out there and has since resumed traveling with the big league team. Long after López departed, the Shrimp rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth. Isan Díaz doubled home Monte Harrison for the game-winner.

Pitching on eight days’ rest, Max Meyer was electric in his Jacksonville debut. From what I can tell, he racked up seven of his career-high 10 strikeouts using his signature slider, two more on fastballs and even one on a changeup.

Kim Ng told Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald that Meyer and Peyton Burdick will “most likely be” in Jacksonville to open the 2022 season. Although that wouldn’t be a shocking outcome by any means, Burdick should get to compete for a spot on the Marlins Opening Day roster before that decision gets made (pending the possible additions of more established outfielders).

Dustin Fowler has driven in 15 runs in his last six games.

Low-A Jupiter

The Jupiter Hammerheads announced their 132-game schedule for the 2022 season:

The Low-A Southeast league is susceptible to rainouts, unfortunately. This year, for example, Jupiter played 117 of the 120 scheduled games, and it required a handful of seven-inning doubleheaders to even come that close.

DSL Marlins (20-32)

Monday’s starting pitcher RHP Jhoniel Serrano: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K

Tuesday’s starting pitcher LHP Dameivi Tineo: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Thursday’s starting pitcher RHP Franyer Duarte: 3.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR

Friday’s starting pitcher RHP Kendry Montesino: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Saturday’s starting pitcher RHP Yaqui Rivera: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K

The DSL team enjoyed a five-game winning streak in July near the very beginning of their season. However, they haven’t had any other streaks of more than two in a row.

Since being sent down from the Florida Complex League, Stiven Almanzar has been mostly terrific. He had one clunker last month (6 ER in 1.0 IP); aside from that, he’s limited opponents to one total run (21.2 IP).

WBSC Under-23 Baseball World Cup

Right-hander Josan Méndez and left-hander Edison Suriel are pitching for their native Dominican Republic in this tournament. Both prospects split their regular season between the FCL and Low-A Jupiter.
