New Marlins Game Recap

  • Tuesday’s minor league scores: Triple-A Jacksonville lost, 7-2; Double-A Pensacola won, 3-2; High-A Beloit lost, 8-2; Low-A Jupiter lost, 2-1; FCL Marlins won, 2-1 (F/7), and won, 7-3 (F/7); DSL Marlins lost, 2-1 (completion of a previously suspended game), and lost, 12-11 (F/8). The (soon-to-be-renamed) Beloit Snappers announced that they will play a 132-game schedule next season.
  • Once again, Miguel Rojas is a nominee for the Roberto Clemente award. It is the most prestigious individual honor that a major league player can receive, annually recognizing somebody who best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Vote for Rojas here.
  • Clemente Day will be celebrated on September 15 moving forward. Players of Puerto Rican descent—like Isan Díaz—can pay homage to the legend by wearing his uniform No. 21, as can any other players who provide their clubs with sufficient advance notice, ESPN’s Marly Rivera reports.
  • FiveThirtyEight gives the Marlins a 50% chance to win their series finale against the Nationals.
  • Brian Anderson underwent left shoulder surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the same surgeon who operated on Sixto Sánchez earlier this year.
  • Placed on the injured list last week with left knee inflammation, Jesús Aguilar is likely done for the season, per the Miami Herald. If so, his final stats are .261/.329/.459, 22 HR, 93 RBI, 113 wRC+, 1.3 fWAR in 131 G.
  • Jordan Holloway (unspecified injury) began a rehab assignment with Low-A Jupiter (1.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K on 27 pitches). Infielder Chris Torres is also back in action, though I suspect his days are numbered in the Marlins organization.
  • Here’s one more plug for our Q&A session with the great Craig Mish. If you prefer bite-size segments, he covered the Marlins’ pursuit of Pittsburgh outfielder Bryan Reynolds and a small step to help remedy the club’s eternal attendance issues.
  • Kyle Glaser of Baseball America is buying into Bryan De La Cruz’s breakout (“he’s made a strong case he can continue being a productive everyday outfielder”).
  • Sunday is Women Empowerment Day at LoanDepot Park. Tickets on sale here include access to a pregame panel and an exclusive Marlins t-shirt.
