Starling Marte Trade

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The recent news of Starling Marte rejecting the Marlins extension offer has me thinking of possible trade destinations for the Marlins center fielder. The first couple teams that came to my mind when thinking of teams in need of a center fielder are the Phillies, the Yankees, and the Braves. With Marte being the best center fielder on the trade block as of right now the Marlins are sure to receive some high talented prospects in return.

Let's start with the Phillies who are my least favorite destination for a Marte trade. The Phillies are in desperate need of a center fielder. Coming off of taking 3 of 4 from the Marlins, the Phillies are certainly in the mix for the NL East crown. Personally, I am not a big fan of the Phillies farm system. Their farm system ranked 27th in Bleacher Report's most recent rankings. Presuming that #1 prospect Mick Abel and their #2 prospect Bryson Stott are both unavailable for trade there is not anything I like from the rest of the farm. The only trade I came up with was Starling Marte for OF Mickey Moniak. Moniak was drafted 1st overall in 2016 by the Phillies and most fans have already presumed him to be a bust. The Marlins would hope that Moniak puts it all together and become a solid outfielder at the MLB level. Maybe the Phillies could throw an a player like Andrew Knapp, who has been a very solid catcher backing up JT Realmuto.

Next team and my favorite of all the mock trades I have put together is the Yankees. This one might be a little bit of a stretch, but I could see it happening. The Marlins trade Starling Marte, Yimi Garcia, and Richard Bleier to the Yankees in exchange for catcher Gary Sanchez and Luis Gil. After a slow start Gary Sanchez has been tearing the cover off the baseball. Sanchez, however is not a very good defensive catcher, but with the Marlins offensive woes a catcher who rakes would be a very good addition to the lineup replacing Jorge Alfaro. Also coming from New York is #5 prospect Luis Gil. Gil is a RHP who has a very nice fastball at the young age of 23. To get him the Marlins would have to give up 2 of their best relievers in closer Yimi Garcia and the very efficient LHP Richard Bleier. The Yankees I could see overpaying for Marte with the soon-to-be 38 year old Brett Gardner ranging center field in the Bronx.

The final trade mock trade is Starling Marte to the Braves. The Braves who have had a very lackluster 2021 are in desperate need of outfield help. The starting outfield on Opening day for the Braves are all gone. Ronald Acuna tore his ACL, Christian Pache struggled mightily in the majors and was sent down to triple A, and Marcell Ozuna who was arrested on aggravated assault along with other charges. The Braves showed they were buying when they went out and got Joc Pederson in exchange for the Braves #8th ranked prospect 1B Bryce Ball. So I can see the Braves going out and getting Starting Marte and Yimi Garcia in exchange for C Shea Langeliers and LHP AJ Minter. This is an overpay for Marte. Despite this, I could see this happening because of all the teams who may be pursuing Starling Marte. Let's start with Langeliers who is the Braves #3 ranked prospect and #56 on's top 100 prospects. He would be huge for the Marlins who lack top catching talent in their farm system. Reliever AJ Minter would also be coming to Miami. The 27 year old has struggled this year and was recently sent down to Triple-A. Yimi Garcia will be going to ATL and would step right in as a late inning option for the struggling Braves bullpen.

So what mock trade would you see most likely happening or which one would help the Marlins the most?
