Earning Their Stripes: 7/16/21

Here’s what happened in the Marlins organization on Friday.

Marlins minor league affiliates went 3-3 on Friday:

  • Jacksonville 9, Durham 4
  • Chattanooga 4, Pensacola 0
  • Quad Cities 6, Beloit 4
  • Jupiter 9, Fort Myers 1
  • GCL Marlins 4, GCL Mets 5
  • DSL Marlins 9, DSL Royals Blue 3

Triple-A Jacksonville (33-29)

Brian Anderson (left shoulder subluxation) started at designated hitter in the first game of his minor league rehab assignment. In three plate appearances, he recorded a sacrifice fly and a pair of strikeouts. The Marlins expect him to be activated from the 60-day injured list as soon as he’s eligible next week.

Bryson Brigman, who undeniably should be up in the bigs right now instead of Isan Díaz, has only six strikeouts in his last 66 trips to the plate (9.1 K%).

Starting for the fourth time in his professional career, Jake Fishman established new season highs with 4 13 innings pitched and six strikeouts.

Lewin Díaz now has 16 home runs this season (14 at Triple-A plus two in the majors).

Double-A Pensacola (36-28)

Breakout left-hander Jake Eder was uncharacteristically shaky early on, but ultimately had a solid outing.

Unfortunately, the Blue Wahoos provided him with zero offensive support. The club was held hitless until a Demetrius Sims infield single in the sixth inning.

Temporarily playing a lot of first base in the absences of Lázaro Alonso and Jerar Encarnación, Riley Mahan is 0-for-his-last 20.

High-A Beloit (28-36)

Kameron Misner has been successful on 18 straight stolen base attempts. Víctor Víctor Mesa picked up his first steal with Beloit and is 3-for-10 in the batter’s box since being demoted from Double-A.

Left-hander Erik Cha made his Marlins organizational debut by working a scoreless ninth inning.

Low-A Jupiter (28-34)

So far, so good for Yeremin Lara since being moved into the Hammerheads starting rotation. He has a 15-inning scoreless streak overall. The Dominican right-hander is slightly old for the Low-A level and should be moving up in the system before season’s end.

Former 15th-round draft pick Javeon Cody more than doubled his season total with a 5 RBI night.

Rookie GCL Marlins (6-6)

Osiris Johnson continues to start daily in center field. He had no minor league experience at the position prior to this season.

Three weeks removed from his most recent game, Beloit’s Nic Ready began his rehab assignment. Ready will presumably head back up to High-A next week.

Rookie DSL Marlins (2-2)

Another day, another four total bases for Yiddi Cappe.
