Fish Bites Episode 63: NL East preview

The Marlins once again will have trouble keeping pace in a division where every other team has some urgency to win now.

Ely brings you more coverage of the Grapefruit League-leading Miami Marlins, beginning with a summary of their Game of the Week (3:00). Then, a whip-around of the rest of the NL East division, with individual segments previewing the Atlanta Braves (14:45), New York Mets (21:40), Philadelphia Phillies (32:40) and Washington Nationals (44:00).

Enjoy Episode 63!

Entering Monday, the Marlins have a 7-2 record, the best of any Florida-based Spring Training team. Standout performers include Lewis Brinson (.500/.500/1.167, 2 HR), Jerar Encarnación (.455/.455/1.091, 2 HR), Yimi García (0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP, 6 K in 4.0 IP) and non-roster invitee Christian Lopes (.417/.462/.833, 1 HR).

Encouraging as that may be, keep in mind that the Fish went 24-52 last season within their own division. Each of those rivals took steps over the winter to improve their major league roster, or at the very least, acquire veterans to compensate for big-name departures. It’s once again a long shot for Miami to finish anyplace aside from the NL East cellar.
