Marlins offense and pitching had no answer for the Braves’ terrific night

After only giving up three runs or fewer in his last five starts, Ureña finally imploded.

The Marlins were overpowered all night by Braves starter Mike Soroka. José Ureña was hit hard by an aggressive Braves offense. The Marlins offense also struggled to get anything going. Mix that together and you get a bad 7-1 loss.

José Ureña: 3 IP, 11 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 HR

Mike Soroka: 8 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 0 HR

The Braves jumped on the board early and often. Dansby Swanson started things off with a single. Freddie Freeman followed that up with a big two-run home run. The pitch from Ureña was at the knees. Freeman would continue to beat up on the Marlins later on.

The next inning was also trouble for Ureña. He struggled, and it showed, especially when he walked the pitcher on 6 pitches. Two singles later, and the Braves had another run. Three singles in the third gave the Braves a 4-0 lead. Everyone was jumping on Ureña's pitches.

The fourth inning was the end of Ureña's night. Ronald Acuña Jr. started the inning with a solo shot to center field. Swanson again singled, and this time Freeman doubled him home. Six runs was all Don Mattingly had to see to finally yank Ureña from the game. Wei-Yin Chen was called in to stop the madness. Chen gave up one run in his two innings of work, so that's something.

The Braves, now equipped with 7 runs made pretty easy work of the Fish. The Marlins had a total of five hits all night. Two of those hits happened in the ninth. Mike Soroka was dominant, to say the least. The Marlins could not keep up with Soroka. They had a few opportunities to score, but Soroka shut them down time and time again.

Friday’s game was not all bad, though. Starlin Castro collected the 1,500th hit of his career. He also scored the only run of the game.

Jeff Brigham pitched three scoreless innings of relief. Tyler Kinley also had himself a clean inning.

The Marlins will be sending out Trevor Richards to take on Julio Teheran at 4:10 ET.
