Acquired in the J.T. Realmuto deal with Philadelphia, Jorge Alfaro won’t be available for the weekend series against his former team after being placed on the 7-day IL on Friday with a concussion.
Alfaro has played very well for the Marlins this season, slashing .261/.312/.419 with nine home runs. His caught stealing percentage of 35% is ranked 10th in the major leagues.
The up-and-coming catcher was hit on the mask multiple times in Thursday night’s game, first by a back-swing from Marcell Ozuna and then later by a foul ball. Bryan Holaday replaced him behind the plate in the ninth inning and figures to get the lion’s share of playing time at the position while Alfaro recovers.

Along with that move, the Marlins transferred Chad Wallach to the 60-day IL. He is also recovering from a concussion. With both of their Opening Day catchers on the IL with concussions, the Marlins added C Wilkin Castillo to the 25-man roster (and the 40-man) to back up Holaday. They also optioned struggling OF Austin Dean to Triple-A New Orleans and called up RHP Jeff Brigham to reinforce the struggling bullpen.
