Offseason Fish—12/31/19

New, comments

Before turning their attention to the 2020 MLB season, lots of current and former Marlins players are in the midst of playoff races in Caribbean and South American winter leagues.

For many players within the Marlins organization, baseball never stops. Just like last year, Fish Stripes will be consistently updating the whereabouts of your favorite Fish during the offseason. At, you can find updates on them, including stats, highlights and (small sample size) analysis.

Nicole Fernandez of La Vida Baseball documented the 2019 edition of an annual family reunion that Jorge Alfaro hosts. Fernandez learned that Harold Ramirez, who tagged along for the event, got his “Pitbull” nickname from Alfaro because of Harold’s facial resemblance to his dog, Nano.

Alfaro also received an award this weekend in his hometown of Sincelejo for proudly representing the community through sport.

Dominican Winter League

His Toros del Este has been scuffling a bit to begin the LIDOM Round Robin, losing three of their first five games, but Peter O’Brien is still in MVP form.

Teammate Jarlin García converted the save on Friday. His only previous save as a professional pitcher came on June 29, 2011 as a teenager in the Dominican Summer League! Then on Sunday, García picked up a hold for striking out the only two batters he faced.

Remember César Puello?! He was added to the Leones de Escogido roster just in time for the Round Robin, where he’s competing alongside catcher Wilkin Castillo.

Puerto Rican Winter League

  • C Brian Navarreto—.186/.240/.214, 2 RBI, 2 SB, 17 K in 70 AB
  • INF Yadiel Rivera—.202/.252/.343, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 5 SB, 24 K in 99 AB

Rivers had been playing exclusively at shortstop for Atenienses de Manati this season, but finally got to demonstrate his versatility in the nightcap of Sunday’s doubleheader. He started at third base and moved to center field during the later innings.

Final 2019-20 regular season stats

  • RHP Dustin Beggs—4.99 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 35 K in 30.2 IP (6 GS)

Beggs was the shining star for the Adelaide Giants on Saturday in their first game of a doubleheader, working a seven-inning complete game. His 13 strikeouts matched Edward Cabrera (High-A Jupiter) and Daniel Castano and Jorge Guzman (Double-A Jacksonville) for the highest total by any Marlins organizational pitcher in any professional game in 2019. He finishes the calendar year with 143 total innings pitched, striking out 124 batters across five different levels/leagues.

Lovin’ the mustache, too.

The Giants confirm that this was Beggs’ final appearance for them. Strong chance that he will be a non-roster invitee to major league spring training.

Mexican Pacific League

  • C Julian León—.249/.382/.474, 9 HR, 27 RBI, 59 K in 173 AB

Thursday’s matchup between Cañeros de los Mochis and Naranjeros de Hermosillo received plenty of attention, though not for the right reasons. There were two bench-clearing incidents, including the one shown above in the eighth inning with Julian León behind the plate. Hermosillo would hold on to win the game, but León was ejected for instigating and shoving members of the other team. The league also suspended him for one game.

The 23-year-old is currently slumping in the midst of an otherwise excellent season, whiffing far too frequently.
