Fish Bites Episode 50: Predicting Marlins’ non-tender deadline decisions

Introducing a new tool that provides an overview of the Marlins farm system and previewing Monday’s MLB non-tender deadline.

Patrick Gorski-USA TODAY Sports

What should the Marlins do with José Ureña, Adam Conley and JT Riddle prior to Monday night’s non-tender deadline? Ely reviews their “platform year” performance from 2019 and makes recommendations to the front office (1:15). Then, Daniel De Vivo debuts on Fish Bites to share his updated Marlins top prospects list (33:00) and thoughts on the contentious MLB/MiLB negotiations over the Professional Baseball Agreement (51:00).

Enjoy Episode 50!

Ureña and Conley, both entering their second year of arbitration eligibility, are projected by MLB Trade Rumors to earn $4 million and $1.6 million, respectively (they had salaries of $3.2 million and $1.1 million last season). Riddle’s arb projection is $0.9 million. Even assuming that all three of them are retained for those amounts, the Marlins enter the meat of the offseason with the league’s lowest 2020 payroll commitments.

De Vivo’s list runs 118 players deep. Here are some of the notable rising and falling prospects over the past calendar year:

  • OF Jerar Encarnación up from No. 49 ranking to No. 14
  • RHP Humberto Mejía up from No. 61 to No. 23
  • SS/2B Demetrius Sims up from unranked to No. 48
  • 3B/SS Joe Dunand down from No. 15 to No. 46
  • 3B James Nelson down from No. 12 to No. 55
  • RHP Tyler Kolek down from No. 35 to No. 81
  • OF Isael Soto from No. 25 to unranked (released)
  • RHP Ethan Clark from No. 45 to unranked (retired)
