Now through Friday night, we are accepting submissions for the first-ever Fish Picks 40-Man Contest.
So, uh...what is it? Simply put, the goal is to predict who will be on the Marlins 40-man roster entering 2020, specifically on Feb. 17 (the date of the first full-squad workout).
Since the end of the regular season, the Marlins have trimmed a handful of players from their ranks. As of right now, the roster is at 35:
Pitchers (20)
- Sandy Alcantara
- Austin Brice
- Jeff Brigham
- Wei-Yin Chen
- Adam Conley
- Robert Dugger
- Jarlin García
- Tayron Guerrero
- Jorge Guzman
- Elieser Hernandez
- Jordan Holloway
- Kyle Keller
- Tyler Kinley
- Pablo López
- Brian Moran
- José Quijada
- Caleb Smith
- Ryne Stanek
- José Ureña
- Jordan Yamamoto
Position Players (15)
- Jorge Alfaro
- Jon Berti
- Lewis Brinson
- Starlin Castro
- Garrett Cooper
- Austin Dean
- Isan Díaz
- Curtis Granderson
- Monte Harrison
- Martín Prado
- Harold Ramirez
- Miguel Rojas
- Jesús Sánchez
- Magneuris Sierra
- Neil Walker
Absent from that group? Brian Anderson, JT Riddle, Drew Steckenrider and Chad Wallach are all on the 60-day injured list. The Marlins must soon decide whether or not to reinstate them. Granderson, Prado and Walker are pending free agents (five days after the conclusion of the World Series). Castro’s club option is expected to be bought out, making him a free agent as well. As detailed on Fish Stripes recently, a handful of Marlins top prospects must receive 40-man protection from Rule 5 Draft eligibility.
So, yeah: there will be many changes between now and Spring Training. Can you anticipate them all?
Scoring System/Deadline
Not all correct predictions are weighted the same:
- 1 point for predicting a player who is already on the Marlins 40-man roster (as of Nov. 1, 2019)
- 2 points for predicting a player who is in the Marlins organization, but not already on the 40-man (for example, Brian Anderson should be an easy 2-pointer)
- 5 points for predicting a player who isn’t already in the organization (free agent signing, trade, waiver claim, etc.)
During the 2019 regular season, most of you submitted Fish Picks on Twitter. That would be more awkward in this case due to the character limit (either split the 40 names into multiple tweets or tweet a screenshot of all the names). Instead, I highly recommend submitting by commenting directly on this article. So easy to “join the Fish Stripes community” if you don’t already have an account.
Deadline to submit is Friday, Nov. 1 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Grand Prize?!
The contestant with the most points will win...something! I haven’t decided exactly what yet. Maybe a new item coming to our Fish Stripes Store, a pair of Opening Day tickets, etc. Something to that effect.
Good luck and please spread the word!
