There is no individual publication that can perfectly predict the careers of professional baseball players, but Baseball America’s track record speaks for itself: it’s the gold standard for talent evaluation right now. More so than most national outlets, BA puts serious effort into covering the Marlins farm system. Their staff’s opinions on prospects are to be taken seriously.
Here is their preseason Top 10 list:
- OF Víctor Víctor Mesa
- RHP Sandy Alcántara
- OF Monte Harrison
- RHP Nick Neidert
- OF Connor Scott
- RHP Jorge Guzmán
- RHP Edward Cabrera
- 2B Isan Díaz
- C Will Banfield
- SS José Devers
Lots of overlap between theirs and ours.
BA content requires a paid subscription. If you don’t have the disposable income for it (or spent what you had on our new Fish Stripes merch!), you’re in luck.
The 40-minute conversation between Kyle Glaser and Keegan Lowe is linked here.
Can’t listen to audio right now? These are the key takeaways from Lowe, who was the architect of BA’s Top 10 list:
•Marlins were 30th in farms last year; agreed with decision to rebuild
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•”Marlins system has gotten a lot better”
•”They’re on the rise...finally have hope as a franchise again”
•At MLB Level: stated that Anderson, Lopez and Richards were positives
•Very high on Anderson
• “2021” as the next year where Miami should be competitive again
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•Eluded that for those that believed the rebuild wasn’t necessary, the Marlins haven’t had a winning season since 2009
•Stated that Top 4 prospects are a different tier from rest (VVM, Sandy, Monte, Neidert)
On Victor Victor Mesa
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•Victor Robles comp
•Potential 5-Tool Big Leaguer
•Projected #2 hitter
•Room for sneaky power with proper training
•Projected quick timeline moving forward
On Sandy Alcántara
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•“My first line is....it’s WOW stuff”
•Front of the line starter; at least a #2 or #3 with a safe floor of dominant reliever
Stated that at least both of Victor Victor Mesa and Alcántara will be in the 2019 Top 100
*cough* Pipeline is lost *cough*
On Monte Harrison
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•Could make argument for being top Miami prospect
•Upside is well above other prospects, but highly volatile
•Interesting: after his strike out struggles, HE went to MIAMI and asked them how to fix it. Lower leg kick was part of solution
On Nick Neidert
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•Confident he hits his ceiling of mid-rotation arm
•Can see him in Miami this upcoming season
On Connor Scott
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•”A raw collection of all tools”
•Kyle Tucker comp
•Plus runner, who can stick in CF, but his height may move him to corner spot
On Jorge Guzman and Edward Cabrera
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•Both have high octane and high ceilings, but carry significant “reliever risk”
•If they click with control, top to mid rotation
On Isan Diaz
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•”Solid all around player”
•Could project as .250 with 20 HR and Plus defense at 2nd
•Confidence that he will be Miami everyday starter by no later than 2020 Opening Day
On Trevor Rogerz
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
•Showed flashes of “Oh yeah, that’s a Top 10 draft prospect”
•“Numbers aren’t good, but there’s something there”
•Gets up to 96MPH
•”The stuff is there, he just needs to pitch more”
When asked about who sticks out as the best “third piece” from the rebuild.
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
The answer was Jordan Yamamoto.
Yelich Trade:
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
“The Marlins weren’t winning with Yelich, he wasn’t going to win MVP in Miami. It’s unfair to compare Yelich to these four guys. The talent is there....to have guys that will impact the major league team for a long time”
Said he likes the pieces they got back.
When asked about sleepers in the farm system:
— Danny (@all_right_Miami) January 7, 2019
Jordan Halloway
“Has all the stuff of at least mid rotation, if it ever clicks...who knows”
There will certainly be movement atop the list in the coming months. The Marlins consider elite prospects to be a pre-requisite in any potential J.T. Realmuto trade. Somebody new needs to slide into the Top 10 once Alcántara “graduates” from prospect status. Also, whomever the franchise selects with the No. 4 overall pick in June’s draft figures to have as much upside as any current farmhands.
For the first time several years, it’s an exciting time to follow the Marlins minor leagues.
