Marlins-Pirates Oct. 1 makeup game cancelled; regular season ends Sunday

For the second time in the last three seasons, the Marlins won’t play a full 162-game schedule.

This doesn’t come as a surprise.

The surprise was the initial announcement a couple weeks ago. A gloomy weather forecast in Pittsburgh on September 9 forced the Pirates to postpone their scheduled game with the Marlins. However, with the club in the midst of a hot streak, not officially eliminated from postseason contention and zero more mutual off days remaining, they tentatively picked October 1 as a makeup date.

We speculated that the game might still get played to settle a draft position tiebreaker (and to bring in a bit of extra revenue).

But apparently not. This is the fourth time in Marlins history that they’ll finish at only 161 games—also 2000, 2008 and 2016—and each of those were non-playoff seasons.

There is a silver lining, though. Entering Tuesday night’s contest against the Nationals at 62-94, it is impossible for the Fish to reach 100 losses. They were widely projected to reach that dubious mark (not by us!).

Now that we can see the finish line, I’m taking recommendations for what end-of-season content you want on Fish Stripes. Comment below!
