Draft Day 1 News

The 2018 MLB Amateur Draft is first true test for the Gary Denbo led scouting and development department. They flooded the farm this offseason with plenty of intriguing talent after trading Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna, and Dee Gordon but this is their first opportunity to select their own guys and mold them from the start.

On June 4, the Marlins took OF Connor Scott with the 13th overall pick, SS Osiris Johnson with the 53rd overall pick, and C Will Banfield with the 69th overall pick.

According to MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro, a deal between Scott and the Marlins is agreed upon (pending a physical).

Despite top-tier starting pitching, in Brady Singer and Matthew Liberatore, falling beyond the 12th spot in the draft, the Marlins stuck to their theme of athletic high-school prep hitters. Denbo was quoted later that night saying, ”When you’ve got a premium athlete like Scott and Johnson, and then Banfield behind the plate, over time you find that premium athletes make adjustments much quicker as they go through their professional career.”

Draft Day 2 begins at 1:00pm and can be followed live on MLB.com. Stay up to date with the MLB Draft Tracker.

Marlins 25th Anniversary Weekend

The Marlins have announced the Marlin alumni who will be participating in the festivities from June 8 to June 10. Some legendary Marlins such as Placido Polanco and Ed Lucas are among those alumni...and other guys like Jeff Conine, Juan Pierre and Livan Hernández will also be there.

In all seriousness, the Marlins have some fantastic activities planned out for Marlins fans, both young and old, to enjoy and relive these very interesting 25 years. Among those activities will be an alumni softball game before the Marlins and Padres game on Sunday.

Marlins on the Move

The second round of the Jacob Turner experiment is now officially over. The Marlins released Turner, a former first-round draft pick, on Saturday, June 2. He had been pitching with Triple-A New Orleans for most of the season.

After being released by the Miami Marlins on May 21, infamous Japanese reliever Junichi Tazawa has found a new home. Tazawa signed a minor league deal with the Detroit Tigers. Only explanation: Detroit wants to challenge the Marlins in the race for the 1st overall pick in the 2019 draft!
