Zack Greinke kept the Marlins bats off balance Saturday night, while the Snakes squared up a few balls in the early innings to take command on their way to a 6-2 victory.
- Zack Greinke: 6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K (109 pitches)
- KKKKKaleb Smith: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (78 pitches)
For the first time all season, Smith surrendered multiple home runs in the same start. If it’s any consolation, the culprits were Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta, the two most accomplished offensive players in Arizona’s lineup.
Greinke, on the other hand, made himself unpredictable to induce plenty of awkward hacks and weak contact. The former Cy Young award winner got swinging strikes from five different pitches—fastball, slider, curveball, changeup and eephus—according to Statcast. Miguel Rojas was one of several starters to express his displeasure.
Losing for the fifth straight time overall matches the Fish’s longest streak of the season. It also continues the trend of disappointing performances away from Miami. This club has not won the majority of its games on any road trip in 2018 (best-case scenario on current trip is now 5-5).
Brian Anderson’s sixth-inning triple brought home Starlin Castro for his 25th run batted in. That broke a tie with Justin Bour, Castro and Rojas for the Marlins lead. Doesn’t look like my “RBIan Anderson” pun is catching on, but cherishing the opportunity to use it here.
Lewis Brinson was left out of the starting lineup. Every time he looks to be on the verge of a demotion, though, the 24-year-old does something like this:

Name | Team | IP | ERA | FIP | K/9 | fWAR |
Caleb Smith | Marlins | 56.1 | 3.51 | 3.21 | 11.02 | 1.4 |

Matchup Summary
Yeah...let’s not dwell on Friday night. Elieser Hernández wasn’t sharp and Jarlin García continued to struggle in relief situations with the Diamondbacks running up the score to 9-1.
Caleb Smith vs. Zack Greinke is a legitimately sexy pitching matchup considering how weak both these teams are in other areas.
Despite the homer splurge in the series opener, Chase Field generally has been a lower-scoring environment in 2018 with the introduction of the humidor. The Marlins may need to manufacture offense against Greinke with good situational hitting rather than expecting to slug their way to an upset win.
Thread Question: With the MLB amateur draft upcoming on Monday, what position do you want the Marlins to address with their top pick?
