Elieser Hernández struggles; Marlins can not keep up offensively.

Diamondbacks jumped all over the Fish for a 9-1 victory.

MLB: Miami Marlins at Arizona Diamondbacks Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The tweet above tells much about the game for the Fish. Elieser Hernández had been on a good run leading up to this game, but he was due to fall soon. It only takes so much time before other teams know what to look for. Hernández’s stuff was not there tonight either and the Diamondbacks jumped all over him. The home run ball was killer for Hernández tonight as he gave up three of them in his three innings of work.

The bullpen would also give up three home runs. Jarlin García would give up two of those home runs. García has not been sharp since being moved into the bullpen. Brad Ziegler who just lost his closing job also came into the game for the Fish. He would give up a home run in his one inning of work.

The offensive side of the ball was a bit better for the Fish. They would collect eight hits throughout the game, but could not score more than one run. Derek Dietrich had three hits in the contest, two singles and a double. Everyone else in the starting line up had one hit, besides Hernández, Brian Anderson and Miguel Rojas.

The seventh inning was the one time where the Fish were able to produce a run. After a Dietrich single and a J.T. Riddle single, Lewis Brinson came up to the plate. Brinson was able to send a line drive into centerfield to score Dietrich. The Fish would not be able to bring anyone else home after that.

The Marlins have Caleb Smith going up against Zach Greinke tonight. Smith has been cruising as of late and will look to add another win under his belt. Greinke has not gotten a win since April 30th, despite maintaining a 3.65 ERA. This should be a pitchers duel tonight. Game time is 10:10 pm Eastern Standard time.

Matchup Summary

The Marlins have started off their road trip by losing three out of four games to the San Diego Padres. While this is pretty bad, there is one side of good news: Brad Ziegler has been removed from closer and Kyle Barraclough has taken the reigns.

The Arizona Diamondbacks, on the other hand, took two out of three from their recent series against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Fish will look to jump on Clay Buchholz tonight. Buchholz was injured nearly all of last season, and had to accept a minor league deal from Arizona entering 2018. This will be only his third major league start with the organization.

The Fish will be bringing out Elieser Hernández, who looks to continue his strong run on the mound. He has pitched 18 innings for the Fish with a 2.50 ERA, a small but nice sample. Let’s see if Miami can start this series on the right foot.
