Drew Carey used to describe Whose Line Is It Anyway as “the show where everything’s made up and the points don’t matter”. That also pretty well encapsulates my feelings about spring training baseball. Don’t get me wrong, both the show and spring ball are incredibly entertaining, but let’s pump the breaks a bit. It would be foolish to try to derive applicable, long-term information from eleven games in February and March. Although, eleven games means we’re basically one-third of the way through all of spring training! This will be a season were Derek Jeter and the Marlins will be tinkering a lot with the lineup to see what they have to build on for the future, so keeping track of the numbers from the jump will be a big factor in determining who plays in Marlins Park in 2018.
It is also important to note when analyzing the information below that a batter must have 1.86 PA per team game played to qualify for league leadership in AVG, OBP, or SLG. Additionally, a pitcher must have 0.6 IP per team game to qualify for spring training league leadership in ERA. Since we are only one-third of the way through the spring, I just included information from batters with at least eleven total at-bats (1 PA/G) and pitchers with at least eleven batters faced (1/BF). If you are unfamiliar with any of the stats in the chart, I always recommend the FanGraphs Library Stat Glossary located here. Behold! Your 2018 Marlins statistical leaders only 23 days away from the first game of the regular season.
