Short-Season-A
New York-Penn League
Batavia Muckdogs 3, Mahoning Valley Scrappers 4
Only one game was slated for Miami’s minor league affiliates on Tuesday, as the Florida State League and the Pacific Coast League have wrapped for the season.
The Muckdogs (30-43) hosted the Scrappers (43-29) with 574 on hand at Dwyer Stadium. Sean Guenther (1-4, 3.83) continued his pattern of pitching well on the road and less well at home. He surrendered three earned runs on five hits, striking out three. He didn’t walk anybody, which dropped his walk frequency to just one per 10 innings. He has issued five free passes in 51 combined innings between GCL and Batavia, while whiffing 44 batters.
Kenny Koplove pitched 1 1⁄3 scoreless innings, Brady Puckett struck out three in two innings, allowing one earned run, and Bryce Howe struck out one in a perfect ninth.
Dillon Persinger (1) hit a two-run homer in the second inning off of Guenther to get things started for playoff-bound Mahoning Valley, then Simeon Lucas added an RBI-single in the third.
Batavia got on the board in the sixth frame on #13 prospect Thomas Jones’ RBI-double and a Lazaro Alonso RBI-single to get the Dogs within a run. Persinger added a leadoff homer off Puckett in the seventh to set the score at 4-2, bad guys. The Muckdogs added a run in the eighth when Jared Barnes hit an RBI-double.
Guenther finished with a GameScore of 46, getting 48-of-71 pitches over the plate. Opposing starter Elijah Morgan surrendered just a hit and a walk over his four inning start, striking out four and dropping his ERA to 1.03 with a 64 GameScore. Zach Draper (2-0, 2.13) earned the win for the Scrappers.
The only Muckdog to finish with more than one hit was Jones, who added a single to his double, and also stole a base. #8 prospect Brayan Hernandez went 0-for-3, and #21 Sean Reynolds went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
Persinger leads Mahoning Valley over Batavia 4-3
