Marlins News
Once again the Marlins are below .500 after getting shutout by the Phillies. Mark Leiter Jr. kept the Fish in check, pitching seven shutout innings while striking out five.
Odrisamer Despaigne pitched two and two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run. Jarlin Garcia made his first appearance since August 11 after being placed on the 10-day DL. The Marlins are going to need stellar pitching in the coming weeks if they want to make a serious run at the Wild Card.
Miguel Rojas broke up Leiter Jr’s no-hitter in the top of the sixth inning with a double down the third base line.
Vance Worley is pitching for the Marlins today at 1:05 p.m. hoping to bring the team back to .500 again. Worley is 2-1 with a 2.42 ERA in his last four starts.
Down on the farm, Trevor Richards, the Marlins No. 19-ranked prospect according to MLB.com pitched 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Richards and Brian Anderson are a couple of names to keep an eye on as potential September call-ups.
Around the League
Rich Hill pitched nine innings of no-hit baseball, losing the perfect game in the top of the ninth, then followed that up in the tenth inning by giving up a walk-off home run to Josh Harrison. In the span of one inning Hill lost a perfect game, no-hitter, and the game.
Zach Britton’s consecutive saves streak is over after allowing a game-tying sacrifice fly to Matt Joyce as part of a two-run ninth inning for the Athletics. Manny Machado picked Britton and the Orioles up in the bottom of the 12th with a walk-off home run.
The Cardinals will have to finish the season without their closer after Trevor Rosenthal was placed on the 60-day DL and will undergo Tommy John Surgery.
It seems that Father Time isn’t going to stop Adrian Beltre, who hit not one but two home runs against the Angels. He now has 461 for his career and is within striking distance of 500.
