Marlins reliever Kyle Barraclough was reinstated from the 10-day disabled lsit Tuesday afternoon, while Jarlin Garcia was placed on the 10-day DL with a left biceps strain. The injury was retroactive to August 12.
Barraclough has been out since July 25 with a right shoulder impingement. He pitched two innings during his rehab assignment, and most recently pitched Saturday.
He will provide a big boost to an inexperienced bullpen that has been ravaged by injuries and trades. Barraclough was a candidate to replace AJ Ramos as the Marlins closer, but since he was injured when Ramos was traded, Brad Ziegler took over the ninth inning role.
Ziegler has not blown a save since taking over as closer, meaning Barraclough might have to wait until next year to take over the role. For now, he is expected to continue his role as a set-up man. Barraclough has posted an 3.30 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 46.1 innings this season.
Garcia, on the other hand, becomes the eighth Marlin on the disabled list. In his rookie season, Garcia has impressed, pitching to a 3.43 ERA ad 0.99 WHIP in 39.1 innings. Garcia last pitched August 11 when he recorded one out without allowing a hit against the Rockies.
With Garcia heading to the DL, the Marlins again have zero left-handed pitchers in the bullpen. Miami could recall Hunter Cervenka to get a lefty in the ‘pen, or could send Justin Nicolino to the bullpen if Chris O’Grady comes off the DL soon.
In other Marlins injury news, starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen is finally inching closer toward a return to the majors. Chen, who has been out since early May with a partially torn UCL, is scheduled to pitch in a one-inning simulated game Wednesday.
Additionally, shortstop J.T. Riddle underwent shoulder surgery on Friday and will be out for six months. With that timeline, Riddle would be ready to go in February, which would allow him to return for spring training.
