New Orleans Baby Cakes - Triple-A
Pacific Coast League
Colorado Springs Sky Sox 1 @ Baby Cakes 0
The Baby Cakes’ Tom Koehler took a tough luck loss on Saturday. After giving up a leadoff home run to Kyle Wren (the second start in a row he has done so), Koehler shut out the Sky Sox for the next 6 1/3 innings, and the Cakes bullpen tossed 2 2/3 shutout frames as well. However, the Cakes failed to support Kohler in front of a disappointed 8,145 fans at Shrine on Arline, in a 1-0 shutout.
In three games at New Orleans, Koehler has thrown 15 2/3 innings, giving up only six hits and two runs, both on leadoff solo homers. He has walked five and fanned 22 holding the opposition to a meager .113 batting average. Despite being “shocked” by his initial demotion, he has made the post of his time in triple-A and hopefully can see a return to the big club soon.
Att: 8,145
The Cakes will face the Sky Sox again at 12 pm CDT on Sunday. William Cuevas will get his first start for the Marlins organization after being picked up on 6/5 after being released by the Tigers.
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp - Double-A
Southern League
Jumbo Shrimp 1 @ Jackson Generals 3
Well, in this game one team also hit a first inning solo home run and was shut out for the rest of the game, but unlike the 1-0 affair in New Orleans the other team scored three runs to win the game.
Third baseman Brian Anderson, the top ranked position player in the Marlins system, hit his team-leading 11th homer in the first, but that was all the offense the Shrimp would muster in a 3-1 loss.
Mike Kickham gave up three runs over six innings and took the loss. Catcher Cam Maron had two hits including a double for the Shrimp.
Att: 4,234
Chris Mazza starts for the Shrimp in game four of this five-game set on Sunday night at 7:05.
Jupiter Hammerheads – Single -A Advanced
Florida State League
Hammerheads 3 @ Palm Beach Cardinals 5
In this loss, the Hammerheads took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, powered in part by a solo homer by catcher John Silviano. The Cardinals came back to tie the game in the bottom of the second and pulled away to win the game 5-3.
Adeiny Hechavarria, rehabilitating Marlins shortstop and Fish trade bait, batted leadoff and had a single and RBI tonight for the Hammerheads.
Hammerheads starter and University of Washington product Jeff Brigham gave up four runs over 6 1/3 innings for the loss.
Jupiter plays the Cardinals again on Sunday at 1pm. Scott Squier takes the bump for Jupiter.
Att: 1,951
Greensboro Grasshoppers – Single -A
South Atlantic League
Grasshoppers 5 @ Hagerstown Suns 9
The Hoppers suffered their second straight loss to the Suns, as starter Dylan Lee. Lee gave up seven earned runs on eight hits over four innings in a tough outing. Eight of the nine Hoppers batters had one hit on the evening, with Jarett Rindfleisch being left out of the fun going 0-2. Unable to bunch hits was the Hoppers undoing from an offensive standpoint, as they went only 2-14 with runners in scoring position.
Att: 1,507
Dylan Lee takes the hill for the Hoppers on Saturday at 6:05 in game three of the four game set.
Batavia Muckdogs – Single -A
New York-Penn League/Short Season
West Virginia Black Bears 0 @ Muckdogs 0 (suspended)
This game was suspended due to rain in the third inning, and will be resumed on Sunday.
Dominican Summer League
Rookie League
DSL Marlins 1 @ DSL A’s 8
Daniel Paulino had two of the Marlins three hits but there wasn’t much else to cheer, as the Marlins fell 8-1 to the Athletics.
The DSL Marlins play the DSL A’s at 10:30 on Monday morning.
