The Marlins fell to the Nationals 4-2 despite a strong start from Edison Volquez, who went 5 innings giving up no runs and striking out six. It was the Marlins bullpen which blew the lead when David Phelps surrendered 3 runs in his 2 innings of work, giving up home runs to Bryce Harper and Adam Lind. Junichi Tazawa also surrendered a run in his Marlins debut walking 2 and giving up an RBI hit.
The Marlins bullpen is expected to be its strength which makes the fashion of the loss a bit ironic. Nonetheless, Marlins fans should be encouraged by the performance of Volquez. The Marlins offense was ineffective for most of the day, only scoring in the fourth inning on a double by Giancarlo Stanton and a base hit by Marcell Ozuna. While the Fish didn't strike out much, getting on base seemed to be a bit of an issue, only racking up six hits.
The Marlins and Dan Straily will look to bounce back against the Nationals Wednesday.
