Vote for Marlins Player of the Month for April!

Realmuto vs. Ozuna vs. Stanton

sportslogos.com

With this year’s All-Star Game in Miami, we already have at least three strong candidates to represent the Fish as position players. I chose these three as my candidates for the Marlins Player of the Month. Who would you pick as the winner?

1. J.T. Realmuto. J.T. was the player of the week in the National League for the opening week of the season. He sported a .500 batting average (11-for-22), a .542 on-base percentage and a .909 slugging percentage during this period.

He has continued his productivity, and coming into today, he has a .354 average/.400 OBP/.908 OPS with an fWAR of 0.7.

His excellence at throwing out base stealers has been well documented, and he has thrown out 5 of 14 runners so far this year. He is a leading NL All-Star candidate for the Marlins.

2. Marcell Ozuna. A week after Realmuto’s player of the week honors, Marcell won the honor himself. He did this by hitting .435 with four home runs, including a grand slam and 12 RBI to lead the Marlins to a successful opening homestand.

Marcell has cooled off somewhat but remains tied for third in the majors with 21 RBI, and provides solid defense for one of the best outfields in the game.

Other stats include a .289 batting average. He doesn’t walk as much as some of his teammates, and thus only has an OBP of .330 but slugs well enough to have a 890 OPS.

3. Giancarlo Stanton. The Marlins biggest star has already had a slash line of .288/7 HR/15 RBI. His 7 homers are tied for third best in the majors, which included a memorable 2 homer performance against the Mets.

He has advanced stats which include a team-leading OPS of .950, and his intimidating presence in the lineup helps those around him.

Stanton is the face of the franchise, and leads the Fish with a 0.9 fWAR; plus, he has remained on the field, which is probably the biggest accomplishment for a player who has been bitten by freak injuries. Ok, his defense isn’t great, but we can live with that, right?
