Braxton Garrett, who was recently placed on ESPN Insider Keith Law’s list of the game’s top 100 prospects, was deemed Miami’s best prospect by Law. Here is his complete list:
1. Braxton Garrett, LHP (Ranked No. 42)
2. Jarlin Garcia, LHP
3. Brian Anderson, 3B
4. Tyler Kolek, RHP
5. J.T. Riddle, SS
6. Isael Soto, OF
7. Thomas Jones, OF
8. Sean Reynolds, OF
9. James Nelson, 3B
10. Drew Steckenrider, RHP
The Marlins aren’t known for having one of baseball’s best farm systems. In fact, according to Law, they have one of the worst. The club doesn’t have much minor league depth and over the last year has traded a number of prospects away in exchange for major league talent.
Luis Castillo, who was sent to Cincinnati in the Dan Straily trade, almost certainly would have made this list of Miami’s top prospects.
It’s no surprise to see Garrett atop the list because he figures to be a member of the Marlins rotation in the coming seasons. If the Marlins struggle in 2017, they could trade players on the major league roster to rebuild a depleted minor league system.
