Braxton Garrett, the Marlins first-round selection in the 2016 MLB Draft was ranked 43rd on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospects list that was recently released. Garrett was the only Marlins prospect ranked on the list. That makes sense when you consider ESPN's Keith Law ranked Miami's farm system as the second worst in the league last week.

Earlier this week, Jose Fernandez's mother, Maritza Gomez Fernàndez filed in court for the control of her son's estate. The 24-year-old Fernàndez did not leave a will, so the petition will start the process of concluding who will receive his assets.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald chronicles how Chuck Smith went from pitching with the Marlins for two seasons to being elected the mayor of Woodmere, Ohio in 2009, a town of fewer than 1,000 people near Cleveland.

It looks like pitchers Jose Urena, Dan Straily, and Jeff Locke are poised for a battle to occupy the final rotation spot for the 2017 season.

Around the League:

Brandon Moss, a free agent agreed to sign with the Royals yesterday on a two-year, $12 million deal yesterday.

2016 Hall of Fame inductee Frank Thomas took aim at Ivan Rodriguez and Jeff Bagwell over the weekend at SoxFest. While he did not mention the two by name, it was clear he was going after the two for their alleged PED use.

Veteran infielder Ramiro Pena signed with Japan's Hiroshima Carp over the weekend. Pena, 31, was apparently close to returning to the Giants for another season until the deal supposedly fell through.

David Ross might be retired from baseball, but that doesn't mean he won't jump on the chance to work for ESPN. Earlier today, the Worldwide Leader announced that the 39-year-old Ross, who led the Cubs to a World Series victory just this October would be joining the company as an MLB analyst.
