Marlins claim Oswaldo Arcia, place Dietrich on DL

Miami added an outfielder but will be without Dietrich.

Miami acquired outfielder Oswaldo Arcia off waivers from the Rays and placed Derek Dietrich on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion, the club announced Tuesday.

Justin Bour was transferred to the 60-day disabled list, the club announced.

In the absence of Giancarlo Stanton, the Marlins have been seeking corner outfield depth. Miami was reportedly interested in Carlos Gomez before he signed with Texas.

Although Arcia might not have been the Marlins’ first choice, he will give the club another bat to complement Ichiro Suzuki in their outfield.

Arcia, 25, is batting .259/.328/.444 with two home runs and seven RBIs over 21 contests with the Rays. He isn’t much of a power threat but is getting on base at a career .304 pace.

Once Arcia’s disabled list stint ended, the Rays were hoping to option him to the minors. He gives the Marlins a left-handed bat to turn to in Dietrich’s absence.

Dietrich lost his starting job at second base when Dee Gordon returned from his suspension and hasn’t had much success since. Over 106 games, Dietrich is batting .276/.369/.403 with four home runs and 32 RBIs.

While the Marlins moved Bour to the 60-day DL to create a 40-man roster spot for Arcia, he is still expected to return in September.
