Miami placed outfielder Giancarlo Stanton on the 15-day disabled list Sunday morning, and President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill told reporters Stanton is likely out for the season with a grade three groin strain.
The Marlins evaluated Stanton and felt he might have suffered a groin injury. Stanton underwent an MRI, and Mattingly said Sunday the results appeared "pretty serious."
Stanton, 26, was batting .244/.329/.496 with 25 home runs and 70 RBIs before going down.
As the Marlins move forward, they are considering every potential option:
The #Marlins are open to all available options, and that includes Carlos Gomez.

Stanton has had difficulty remaining healthy as seasons progress:
Stanton's season over. That means he'll miss 45.4 percent of all Marlins games in 2015 and 2016.

This might be enough to end Miami’s chance to earn a playoff spot:
Teams go through stuff, but it sure seems like the Marlins have had everything thrown at them this season. This might be final blow.

Look at this:
For 3rd straight year, Stanton will finish season on DL: facial fractures ('14), broken hamate ('15), groin ('16)

A bit of foreshadowing here?
Lovely. I wrote this three years ago (!) re Stanton's injury risk, and, uh, yeah. https://t.co/NLv2dYNukc pic.twitter.com/BxQSQwWuBA

Here’s everything the man in charge knows:

Yeah, A-Rod replacing Stanton doesn’t really make sense:
Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is hurt so the Marlins should sign DH Alex Rodriguez is some kind of logic.

Miami is still in contention, though:
This is the third consecutive season that Giancarlo Stanton's season ended early for the #Marlins, delivering massive blow to playoff hopes

That’s a lot of home runs on accident:
Giancarlo Stanton averages 115 games and 29 HR per season. If he does that through his contract, he'll hit 554 HR. Almost on accident.

Is there still a chance?
Crushing blow in Marlins' attempt to stop MLB's 2nd-longest postseason drought. https://t.co/liE30fIPQR
