Miami made a key trade Friday morning, acquiring Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea from the Padres to upgrade their starting rotation.
With the non-waiver trade deadline just more than six hours away, it seems the Marlins are probably done making deals.
Rea was placed on the 15-day disabled list with elbow soreness, so the Marlins will likely ask around and express interest in adding another veteran starting pitcher. However, given the market, they might not have the depth to get a deal done.
There aren’t many starters known to be available, and there are still a handful of teams seeking starting depth. As a result, the Marlins are likely done on that front.
Miami has expressed interest in adding a left-handed reliever and could continue to do so until Monday’s 4:00 EST deadline. There aren’t many to choose from, and the Marlins’ prospects might not be desirable for other clubs.
With the deadline approaching, remember not to get caught up in rumors, which are just that. Teams will express interest in Jose Fernandez, Christian Yelich and several other pieces of Miami’s major league roster.
The Marlins are seemingly in “win-now” mode, so don’t expect those talks to progress.
