MLB Score: Cardinals 5, Marlins 4

The comeback fall short as the Cardinals take early run lead

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Jose Fernandez (12-5) gave up five runs in five innings and is now 26-2 at home for his career. The Cardinal's Aledmys Diaz hit a home run, doubled and drove in three runs off of Fernandez leading the Cardinals who toppled the Marlins 5-4.

The returning Dee Gordon, did not provide any special lift for Marlins, went 0-4. While Ichiro Suzukie did manage a pinch hit double in the seventh inning and is now twos hits away from three thousand.

Along with Diaz, Matt Holiday also hit a home run off Fernandez. This was the worst home start of his career as prior to tonight Fernandez had never given up more than one home run in a home game, it was also his shorting outing since May fourth. Fernandez even had to protest a balk call in the second inning that was overturned.

The Marlin's attempted comeback started after Chris Johnson RBI double and Martin's Prado two run home run off Michael Wacha in the sixth while in the seventh J.T. Realmuto would score off an Adeiny Hechvarria RBI groundout. However the Marlins would fail to score any runs after the RBI groundout.

Cardinal's pitcher Michael Wacha (6-7) gave up three runs in six innings of work, Seung Hwan Oh got the save for the Cardinals. The Marlins only eight hits all game.

The Marlin's Marcell Ozell hit a couple of comebackers off of Michael Wacha and Hwan both stayed in the game.

Tomorrow night the Marlins are sending Jose Urena (1-2) to the mound while the Cardinals are sending up Mike Leake (7-8).

Cardinals RHP Mike Leake (7-8, 4.24), who is scheduled to start Friday, is 3-0 with an 0.44 ERA in three starts at Marlins Park. RHP Jose Urena (1-2, 5.34) will start for Miami.
