The Miami Marlins will begin a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday evening at Marlins Park. The Marlins are coming off a weekend series with the New York Mets, where they lost two of three games. Philadelphia just lost two of three games to in-state rivals, the Pittsburgh Pirates. These NL East foes met in Philadelphia last week, where the Marlins took three of four games from the Phillies.
The Phillies will send Jeremy Hellickson to the mound, and he could be facing his future team. According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Phillies are scouting the Marlins Gulf Coast League team in preparation for a trade with Miami. Hellickson is 7-7 with 106 strikeouts in 119.2 innings pitched.
He allowed one run and struck out eight batters in his last outing against the Marlins on July 20. The Marlins placed Wei-Yin Chen on the disabled list with a left elbow sprain, which opened a spot for Jarred Cosart to make his first major league start since April 22.
Pitching Match-up:
Team | Starter | ERA | FIP | 2016 ZIPS Projected ERA |
PHI | Jeremy Hellickson | 3.84 | 4.21 | 4.64 |
MIA | Jarred Cosart | 7.98 | 5.12 | 4.04 |
Cosart has been decent in Triple-A New Orleans. He has a compiled a record of 3-4, with a 4.09 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. Cosart is 0-1 in three major league starts this year. The Phillies have lost seven of their last 10 games, but one bright spot has been All-Star outfielder Odubel Herrera.
He had seven hits in 13 at-bats, and scored five runs in the last series against Pittsburgh. Martin Prado has the hot hand for Miami, as he has eight hits and three RBI's in his last four games. Ichiro is still four hits shy of reaching 3,000 hits, and he'll have to wait until to Tuesday to have a chance at reaching that feat.
Prediction: Marlins defeat Phillies, 3-2
