The Marlins selected high school lefty Braxton Garrett with the seventh overall pick in Thursday’s MLB Draft.

Garrett is the second high school pitcher the Marlins have taken with their first pick over the last three drafts. Tyler Kolek, who underwent Tommy John surgery, had just graduated high school when he was selected in the first round in 2014.

Garrett is known for having a plus curveball but also boasts a low-90s fastball and changeup.

Since he is part of Vanderbilt’s deep recruiting class, Garrett might be challenging to sign.

After losing their competitive balance pick in a trade with the Braves last July and their second round pick by signing Wei-Yin Chen, who received a qualifying offer, the Marlins only made one selection Thursday night.

There were not any clear top picks in this year’s draft, so the Marlins turned to one of the more distinguished high school pitchers available.
