Heroes and Zeroes: Phillies 4, Marlins 3

The bullpen, which has been so reliable during this hot streak, let one slip away as the Marlins fall late to the Phils 4-3 in the second game of the three game set in Marlins Park.

Tom Koehler (.293 WPA)

Koehler had his best game of the season here and as James noted in the recap it was a shame he couldn't come away with the victory. Koehler would go seven strong, a meager one earned run on two hits, walking two and striking out eight batters.

Cesar Hernandez (.273 WPA)

A night after posting a -.258 WPA Zero worthy performance, Hernandez ends up a Hero tonight. In between lining out and striking out, Hernandez would single in the fourth, advancing Odubel Herrera who would eventually score on a Ryan Howard sac fly. The big blow, though, was an eighth inning bloop single against Craig Breslow that scored Andres Blanco and moved Herrera up a bag (.239), putting him in position to score later in the inning.

Andres Blanco (.191)

Blanco edges out teammate Jeanmar Gomez (.190) for the last Hero spot. Blanco didn't even start the game, but in his lone appearance up at the dish, he pinch hit for pitcher Brett Oberholtzer and smacked a double off of Kyle Barraclough into deep center, advancing the runner David Lough to third base. Both would later score.

Craig Breslow (-.371 WPA)

Breslow inherited two runners and allowed both to score before being relieved by Bryan Morris.

Kyle Barraclough (-.149 WPA)

Bear Klaw has been money since being called up, but everyone has an off night and tonight was his. The Claw allowed a lead off walk to David Lough and the aforementioned double to Andres Blanco before getting Darin Ruf to ground out and being pulled in favor of Breslow.

Giancarlo Stanton (-.149 WPA)

Speaking of off nights...a mere 24 hours after hitting the season's longest homerun, Stanton ends up a Zero. He struck out with Yelich on ahead of him in the first inning, grounding out in the fourth, grounded out again in the sixth (again, with Yelich on base in front of him), and flew out in his last at bat in the eighth. Baseball, everybody.
