Jackson, 32, pitched to a 3.07 ERA and 3.82 ERA over 55.2 innings with the Braves and Cubs last season. While both clubs exclusively used Jackson as a reliever, the veteran has starting experience with the Nationals, Tigers and Rays.
Miami was seeking a veteran starter to join Jose Fernandez, Tom Koehler and Jarred Cosart in the 2016 starting rotation. Jackson had logged at least 140 innings in eight consecutive seasons heading into 2015 and will likely serve as Miami's fourth or fifth starter. The Marlins can also utilize Jackson as a long reliever.
Frisaro adds the Marlins, even after adding Jackson, are expected to pursue another starter. The Marlins do have depth in Jose Urena, Justin Nicolino, Adam Conley and Kendry Flores, but another veteran such as Cliff Lee or Doug Fister could still be considered in the coming days.
Jackson has pitched to a career 4.58 ERA over parts of 13 major league seasons.
