Dylan Axelrod, Dustin McGowan among Marlins Spring Training invitees

The Marlins announced 20 invitees Thursday.

Dylan Axelrod and Dustin McGowan are among 20 Spring Training invitees the Marlins announced Thursday.

Although the Marlins appear to have core in place, the organization typically finds one or two non-roster invitees who thrive throughout the spring and make the major league roster as a result.

Axelrod, 30, struggled with the Reds last season but will have an opportunity win a spot in Miami's bullpen. Over 12.1 major league innings with Cincinnati in 2015, Axelrod pitched to a 7.30 ERA and 8.40 FIP. His career ERA is notably high at 5.27, but the Marlins will likely at least consider adding him to the 25-man roster with a consistent spring.

McGowan, like Axelrod, could be a bounce back candidate in 2016. He tossed 23.1 innings with the Phillies last season, pitching to a 6.94 ERA and 7.81 FIP. McGowan has been plagued by command issues throughout the last few seasons but he might receive a chance to compete for a spot in the bullpen as a long relief option.
