The team that does not like to negotiate contract extensions during the regular season has reportedly already started looking for its next manager. Miami is known to be seeking an experienced manager, and according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, Dusty Baker and Manny Acta are in the mix.
But while the Marlins are searching for their next manager, there is still a familiar face sitting in the dugout. Dan Jennings, who took over for Mike Redmond in May, has served as the team's manager and might have had interest in managing next season. However, the Marlins have told Jennings he will not be the manager in 2016. Whether he still works for the Marlins moving forward is to be determined.
Miami had a meeting to discuss the organization's future, but beyond the fact Jennings was not asked to return as manager, the other conclusions drawn are unclear. The timing of Miami's managerial search is notable, though. It was expected the club would wait until the end of the season. Why start now?
If Jennings opts to pursue other opportunities (he reportedly has lost power within Miami's front office), the Marlins will have a general manager vacancy to fill. Jeff McAvoy or Mike Berger could step in, but each likely has a different idea with regard to who the Marlins' next manager should be. Experienced is a broad term. There are almost certainly a handful of other factors, too.
Since the Marlins appear to be unsure of who the GM will be heading into 2016, starting the interview process for a new manager is notable. Miami will not be the only club seeking a new manager. But there numerous candidates. The benefit to getting a head start is finding and subsequently signing a good fit. However, that could also leave qualified individuals out of the conversation.
Miami has not publicly said Jennings will not return as manager. He appears to be unaware of the interviews the Marlins have conducted, which might encourage him to consider working within other organizations. Unless Jennings has agreed to step back into the front office, which at this point appears questionable, the club is conducting interviews for a position that is not currently available.
Getting a head start on 2016 is one thing. Conducting interviews for a momentarily unavailable position is another.
